Well somone needs to check an older model - an '03 maybe - to see what pump is fitted....

Blue Arrow - maybe you should get the old pump back from dealer so we can compare ?

I also find it wierd that these pumps "fail" - is it the motor thats just not up to the load ir is it the impeller that gets chewed up ??? The higher heat capacity that some modded cars run might also put strain on the pumps design limits.

Its possible that some guys who add some non stock additives to their coolant does damage to the pump impeller or seals... dunno just guessing - but these things should be able to run for years - my fountain pump in my garden is on 24/7/365 for the last 5 years and no probs ...

Another problem occurs when the cooling system is opened and then not bleed to remove all air, this is a very important procedure which requires specialized equipment at the MB dealership.

E55 2004
My car has a build date: 05/06/2004, I'll get the original pump and post details soon. Drove last nite, car seems to pull better higher up(top of third and fourth). Could be just in my mind, but i use a measured 1.2km to test my car and last nite i caught the speed limiter before the end, previous three tries i must have reached it about 100m past that point.

I inquired about the IC pump TSB when I brought my car (December '04 build) in for the SBC campaign this morning. I was told that it does exist, but your car has to throw the appropriate code for M-B to perform the fix. Unfortunately, mine didn't, so 'scuse me while I go hammer on it some more.

Back from trip to France - wow much better roads than the UK - and clear of traffic, and speed cameras (as far as I could tell) ... managed more than a few blasts up to good speeds and no sign of any S/C shut off - temps were around 18-19 deg C so I would definitely not expect any.

His response was that Mb and AMG are fully aware that the i/c pump and relay are a direct cause of this and that he will order me an upgraded pump and relay that improves this condition and he will have it intsalled while the car is with them. The parts and labour are fully covered under the warranty. I then asked him why Mb does not call all cars back and replace these pumps, his reply was that they will only attend to it when a customer complains about it as most customers don't even notice this issue.
When i get more details, part nos. etc i will post it here.
I have this probelm before.

Steve,

Finally had a chance to check the pump on my '05 (mid-December '04 build) and the Bosch part # is the same as yours: 0392 022 003, M-B part # A 000 550 4883.

Is there a Bosch part # available for the upgraded pump mentioned by Blue Arrow (A 000 500 0186)? I'd like to view the comparative specs on the Bosch site. Note: I don't see a higher-rated Bosch pump than the PCA 12V 0392 022 003 that's listed on the UK site below. Could be that it's just not listed yet or the upgrade is not a Bosch unit. The part finder utility on the US Bosch site is currently down.

The one fitted to my '06...

To the left of the radiator, as you face the car, almost at the bottom. You'll have to move a couple vertical hoses and one horizontal hose out of the way to view the upward-facing label. The latter has both the Bosch part # (top) and M-B part # (bottom) on it. It's really tight - had to wedge my hand in there and use a small LED flashlight.

My MB part number is as per Blue Arrow's i.e. A0005000186, however it has the following Bosch Part number i.e. 0392 022 003. Perhaps Bosch have uprated the model - not sure.

Weird - same Bosch part number, different M-B part number. I did a search on the German Bosch site and came up with nothing. If there was a change, you'd think it would have a different Bosch part number. Think I'll make a couple calls today.

I wonder if the e55 is easier to see than the cls. I can see just the corner of the part sticker and I don't know how I could move all of the hoses enough to ever read the sticker (granted, when i looked the engine was hot and I couldn't even try)
