Very close call ...

... Friday night we were coming back from a short trip when, just ahead of us and on the opposite side of the road, an SUV ran a stop sign right in front of a guy who was speeding and had been drinking. The speeder swerved out to try and go around, saw us coming head on and put his car into the SUV. Both cars collided in front of me (maybe 50 feet) both spun around with the SUV destroyed rear end swinging by my driver's side about 2-3 feet away.

I had to put the E55 into the curb at around 25 mph) but otherwise we are fine.

I *may* need some new rims ... note the concrete chunks between the rims and tires. I don't think this one will buff out ...

Glad you're okay.
Everybody else?

Think an alignment is in order?

Thanks for the sympathy. Yes, I'll request an alignment ... I think it's very expensive on the AMGs - replacement bolts, etc.??

Everyone else was HURT, one badly. The guy who hit the SUV (and was wearing a seat belt but no airbag) put his head thru the windshield leaving a 10" hole and essentially separated most of the front of his face from the skull. Mother and 3 kids in the SUV - all hurt except a 2 YO (most likely in a car seat).

amazing that some people out there are still stupid enough to drink to idiocy and get behind the wheel.

TJC,

You get the 'Professional Bodyguard Driver of the Month' award

It's a good feeling to know that quick decisions and extreme split-second reactions/driving skills are there, waiting to surface and save the day.

Nice work, be proud! Sounds like it coulda been MUCH worse.

I'm not in any way advocating drinking and driving, but I'm a little confused. If the SUV ran the stop sign and he swerved to try and go around it, what does the drinking have to do with it? He could have been speeding sober or not.

Should he have been able to avoid the SUV that ran the stop?

And more importantly, I'm glad you're ok. Sorry about the wheel, though, looks like a new one and an alignment are coming your way.

Damn, sorry to hear about that. At least you're ok. How could a mother with 3 kids in the car run a stop sign, i just don't understand people sometimes. I hope those kids have a speedy recovery.

Kids, like cell phones can be a distraction while driving. Likely just a mistake.

In NJ they keep stats on cell-phone caused accidents so we'll find out from the police report. The SUV definitely ran the stop sign and the only way the other driver could have missed her would have been to have hit us head on.

Looks like I'm going to be out my deductible, though

PS In NJ you can be chaged with DWI even if you're below the legal limit for being drunk. And DWI carries a mandatory 12 - 48 hours in jail or drunk rehab with 90 days jail possible.

I guess I read it wrong at first glance; you're right. If the guy had had a few more drinks he might have been going a little faster and been able to get around the SUV. Or, if he'd had a few less, he might have been driving slow enough to react to the stopsign-runner and avoid hitting anyone. Stranger things have happened. And he's still an idiot for taking the wheel while intoxicated (assuming he was impaired and hadn't just had a drink or two within the preceding several hours).

At first (shop) glance it appears that there is less behind-the-wheel clearance at the front damaged wheel indicating that the suspension may have been pushed in some
