Another tire thread

I've read along with everyone as they ask for recommendations on tires. But it seems rare that anyone ever quantifies their opinions or feelings with any type of hard numbers for their tire choices.

Here's my situation - I have about 13k miles on my E55. The stock Contis have served me well, but need replacement. I want better straight line performance (I've run 1.77-1.85 best 60' times on the stockers), but need a quiet tire. I still have stock wheels, so stock sizes are fine.

I know the PS2 is popular, but I haven't seen anyone running particularly well at the dragstrip with this tire. Is it better than the stock tires from a dig? What about the Eagle GS-D3?

Anyone using drag radials full time? Nittos?

I need something that is quiet on the highway and will cut better than a 1.80 short time at the strip. My car is a cruiser for the most part, but I want to be able to run from a dig

Thanks.

I went from contis to PS2's in stock sizes and the PS2's offer amazing traction even in the wet. I only have about 1000 miles on them so far so I don't know how long the stickiness will last but they have amazing grip. I have run full throttle in wet weather and they really hang on well. When its dry they barely spin at all. They are equally strong in a straight line and in the curves.

As fas as noise and comfort so far they don't seem any louder than the Contis but they do transmit more of the road to the car. The contis offered a smoother ride. IMO

My best 60' time with Conti's was 1.88. I took the PS2's to the strip twice, and managed a 1.91 with a fairly gentle launch. It is too early for me to say whether they will give me a better 60 foot time. I am waiting for a track rental where I can experiment with launches. I tend not to experiment on normal outings for fear of wasting one of my three runs.

My take on the PS2's is that it has a stiffer sidewall. This helps it handle so much better than the Conti's. It offers more direct steering and better cornering grip. But I suspect that the stiffer sidewall also puts it at a comparative disadvantage against the Conti's at the strip. Having said that, I am confident that I can dip into the 1.8's with this tire.

I am not sure about 1.7's in stock sizes, but I know Fikse ran 1.7's with PS2's on his Viper.

Wayne,

I just got the Eagle F1 GS-D3- 275 35 18. So far so good (only 500 miles)! I have noticed that from a launch they are sooo much better than the Conti's. The traction control does not engage nearly as long as before and the sunshade will open 2-3 inches more on a launch (need to get it tightened soon). Plus, they are pretty quiet on the highway and you can't beat the price.

I vote Eagle GS-D3.

Wayne,

if you want a great tire try the Bridgeston Potenza RE-01Rs...i've had my set for a month or so and they are great. i could tell a bigger difference in performance going from the goodyear gs-d3's then there was going from the contis' to the goodyears...and they're not bad in the rain.

i got a 1.81 out of the contis...1.83 in the goodyears.

on the street with the re01rs i powerbrake up to 1600 and slowly apply the gas...the car is awesome out of the hole...and handling is much better.

any other questions, let me know.

john

Thanks for the info, guys.

Anyone on drag radials full time? I have friends who run Nitto DRs as their street tires with excellent results. I was considering the Nitto DR rears and the NT555 to match up front. Will the 285/35 18 Nitto DR fit on a stock rear wheel without rubbing?

Anyone running this combo? Noise?

from my experience the drag radials are great but if you get caught in the rain they can be a handful. my drag radials had a wear rating of 100...the bridgestones are 140...almost as soft as the DR but good in the rain.

my brother ran them on his vette and hated them in the rain.

What I really need is to find someone selling some stock rear wheels cheap so I can get some decent street tires and mount some DRs up on the spare stock rears

hey enzom, in regards to the PS2 having a stiffer sidewall, how does this affect the progressiveness of the breakaway?

I realise that a stiffer sidewall will sharpen things up a bit, but so far ive been very happy with the progressiveness of the contis! The car feels pretty forgiving in my opinion but then again thats all ive tried.
