SMG Paddles Installed(pictures)

I had time to play around mounting the M3 SMG paddles today. I had to grind most of the plastic off where it would mount to the M3.

For now I have it glued to the wheel. Once I have sometime I'm going to stop at the dealer's parts to see if I can look at one to see how far I can drill into the stock buttons to install two small screws.

It really looks great.

Now for the good part: With in the next coulpe of weeks I will be taking apart a spare wheel I have without the air bag apart and trying to machining an adaptation for the paddles in my Machine Shop. I have 10 CNC mills and 3 CNC lathes that can machine just about anything under the sun.

This would save tons of money over buying the replacement 07 steering wheels of the E63,for those ofm us who want the paddle shifters.

Man that looks real nice. I would LOVE to have them on the beast. Dealer wants crazy $$$ to put an E63 steering wheel in my car.

I think the E63 wheel is ugly. I like the new size but it looks like a CLK wheel. The 55 wheel is much better IMO.

The E63 wheel seems so much nicer than the E55's skinny cheapo. I don't know what they put in an E350 but I bet it's similar to what I have. I was sitting in an E63 in the showroom the other day and that wheel is much beefier along with the paddles, has a great feel & seems to be higher quality. I was shaking my head wondering why they put such a POS wheel in the E55.

This is exactly what I plan on doing. My engineer and I are going to the dealer tomorrow. He wants to take a look at them. If it is feasible we will make the first few out of solid, and then maybe having a investment casting made.

torquey - how much does the dealer want? is it for the wheel alone or the wheel and a new airbag?

Mafioso,

The 200 mph speedo only started with 2005 E55's and after. The 2003 and 2004 have 160 mph speedos.

Cheers,

Darren

I was checking out an E63 in the showroom & commented to a salesman about the E55's wheel vs the E63 wheel. I asked about putting one in an E55 and how much it would cost, he went to the phone & came back and
said "probably around $1700" to swap it out. I am assuming it includes the airbag at that astronomical price. **** that. Then he was questioning the fact that the E63 7 speed tranny might be a factor in the steering wheel being non-compatible with E55's 5 speed tranny (don't ask...) I wasn't real serious about doing it, I just wanted a ballpark figure. Who knows if he was full of BS.

hmm. if that includes the airbag, maybe the wheel can be had for a reasonable cost.

Looks really good!!!

I have a quick question?......the paddle for downshifting seems very close to the signal stork/lever and also close to the cruise lever.....does this new paddle setup interfere with the signalling e.t.c.???

Good eye... It is close. If you pull the high beam all the way back while the wheel is straight it will hit it. I like to drive with the wheel all the way down so if your taking a sharp turn and your leg is in the way it will hit it
