Exclamation Strange Engine noise

When the car is idling when at operating temps, the engine sounds to some degree like a diesel. Quite a bit of clatter coming from the bottom end of the motor. It basically sounds like the bottom end is going to fall out.

I have taken in to the dealer and they say that the noise is normal.

Anyone elses cars make this noise.

Mine has always been oddly rough and sandy sounding too... they told me it was normal as well. Sounds like a bunch of old bearings beginning to die, with some sand thrown in...

My S55 sounds the same way. I think part of the noise is piston slap. It seems that all of these new cars have very short piston skirts for efficiency and power and that can definately add some knocking/rattle type noises.

You should hear how the "yowling V10" on my M5 sounds at idle, like a friggin civic. It buzzes like a lawnmower.

Check where the noise comes from, how loud it is, and how long it lasts. If it is in the head, then it is likely "normal". Our cars run synthetic oil, which takes a sec to get circulated since it drains so well. If the noise is indeed in the bottom, thne that would be the crankshaft bearings and mine is quiet there. BUT, mine is noisy in the head at startup. I'd say get it documented that it is normal. NOT just an I asked and they said. Get an invoice that says what the customer describes and a response from the dealer. That way, you are protected later just in case. These cars are VERY noisy. They are also pretty rough at idle. Just how the beast is.

I had a "machine gun" type noise from my and it tuned out to be a loose pulley. MB covered it under warranty. I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but it wouldn't hurt to get checked out.

Is this a recent addition or has the noise always been there?

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
If you beautiful sound out of motor you need a small block Chevy with a mild cam. Of better yet a RAT motor. They both make symphonic sounds IMHO.

If you're really concerned about this and the dealer is shining you on, get yourself an engine stethoscope. They're fairly inexpensive and are very helpful for locating engine sounds. I used to use a long-*** screwdriver with the handle jammed in my ear.

Pay particular attention to idler pulleys and anything with rotataing parts (supercharger, AC compressor, etc).

I have the same noise and same "normal" answer from the dealer. I was at Renntech and heard a 55 that was not making the noise. I hope you guys post a solution to this issue.
Thanx

any MB engine.. is usually pretty noisy.

Even the C300 and 350 when compared to Honda or Toyota.

The V8's..same thing... compared to Lexus

The good thing that BMW and Audi engines are pretty noisy too.. so I guess its a German engineering thing.

Check your belt tensioner pulley and the pulley beside the tensioner, then can start to go and causing rattling sounds.

I had a funky noise, it sounded rattely like the C230 crappy little motor. Problem was a Supercharger Belt Tensioner cleared under warrenty, I guess it's around 800.00
