Re W211 Airbag unit
Guys - is the E55's airbag / button unit the same across the W211 model range ? I.e. will a 220cdi's airbag / button unit fit the E55's stock S/wheel?

yes - the 55s use the same airbags as the non 55s (the el-cheapo non leather ones) HOWEVER - there ARE DIFERENCES depending on building date!!! meaning that the electronics for the multifunctional part might be different (but that can be swapped out with your current airbag).
