Problem!!!

I was at kleeman for the last 6 hours...this time it wasnt fun!!!

Today the cams got placed..test drove the car and it was fine for 2 minutes until i gave it full throttle till 60mph just to check the a/f ratio...it was reading 11.1 at full load...then i heard a klocking sound coming from the engine...got it back slowly to the workshop to find out the the oil reached the intake and the spark plugs (some plugs where not as bad as others where the oil was up to the thread)...star diagnose read that misfire at piston 3,6,8 (not very sure about which piston exactly)...then we tested the compression in each piston just to check if any damage happened to the engine...the reading was between 9 and 11 which i believe is not bad...what would go wrong and cause the oil to reach that level? what would go wrong in installing a 'plug and play' Kleeman cams?

I hope the info is enough for you to know what could be the problem..

Peace,
Khaled

Not really sure what you mean by this statement. Please clarify.

Misfires indicate that there might be a problem with cam timing. Check that both cams were installed with the proper phasing. It also could be a problem with the cam position sensor.

when i heard that the car dosnt sound healthy...i drove it back very slowly to the workshop (less than a 1/4 mile) so that the technician could check on it...thats when i saw some oil in the throttle body and the spark plugs...

do you think the engine got damaged or should i just redo the installation of cams again?

That just isn't enough info to give you a straight answer. You need to root cause the oil. It will let yoiu know if you've done damage or just a bad fit. I'd assume that you will end up undoing what you did to get at the problem, so in a sense, try re-install. BUT, if there is some issue, I would be careful at just running it until it fixes. Many of your components in your head (cam surface, etc. are actually only strong on the surface. They will QUICKLY deteriorate once pitting starts, so be careful. You may end up thinking all is good and then 5000 miles later all hell breaks loose.

Sounds like a bad seal..

For the sparkplugs it sounds like the seal has a leak on the valve cover. No big problem. And I could see how this could happen. When the oil leaks through the valve cover "O" 's where the spark plug and coil pack goes it will cause a misfire, because oil will dump directly on to the spark plug and coil pack tip. They had to take the valve covers off to get to your cams, so you can see how the leak would start immediately after the job was done. You did not see any exhaust smoke right?? That would mean you have oil in the cylinder itself and also mean possible damage. I'm thinking the oil "up to the threads" is oil that seeped down after the sparkplug was taken out of the cylinder(i.e. you had oil on top of the smark plug not in the cylinder itself.) BTW, If your engine blew oil up the threads then you have a major problem, pull the cams go back to stock and pray for warranty!! I really don't think you have a big problem,(in fact I'd bet on the valve cover gaskets) just makes you wonder what else they did not put together right??? Clean the spark plugs and coil packs and change the valve cover gaskets and tighten them to specs and everything should be fine.

I don't know where the oil in the throttle body came from? A small amount is sometimes normal.

Good luck!

There is no oil source upstream of the throttle body. Look for a vacuum line on the TB to be connected incorrectly - somewhere that has oil vapors available. Oil vapors could be condensing in the TB and getting pulled into the engine. If this is the case, from an engine perspective, it could cause misfires and fouled plugs. I would be more concerned with oil entering the S/C and IC. If you have to drive it until its fixed, keep your foot out of it so the S/C doesn't engage.

Up and running again!!!

Thank you all for the helpfull replyes....

this morning we reinstalled the cams and found out that the driver side plate that is under the valve cover was missing...i wish i had a diagram to show you...its a small plate close to the intake...but anyways the car is up and running like a train..tourque is amazing on these cars isnt it!!!

next mod tmrw....IC heat exchanger will be custom made to be a little wider and bigger...then some testing to check if the intake temp is decreasing...today..on star diagnose the intake temp. reaches 100 on full throttle and then decreases to 65 in a matter of seconds....will let you know....

Thanks again for replying..

Peace,
Khaled
