Revving in Park Question

Revved the car in Park yesterday to see how far the rev limiter woud go, it just got up to just over 3000 RPM.. was quite surprised. is this normal??? thought it would at least go to 6000 or 7000 before being limited..

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
Its to protect the tranny and torque convertor - I have always been told revving an auto box in P or N is bad news ... bit wierd though.

Yeah, I've tried it on a whole bunch of Mercs (S430, S500, S550, CLK500, SL55, E350, E55, C280) and they all limit you at about 4000 RPMs. It kinda sucks when you have an exhaust and want to hear it. The only way to get around this rev limiter is to put the car in drive, hit about 15mph then drop it in neutral, you should be able to rev it all the way to redline. I don't know if this is good or bad, its probably the latter. And before I get flamed, I've only done this a couple of times to my car.

Nearly every late model car has this limiter feature.
