All: I just bought an awesome looking, hyper-performing CPO'd black 2003 E55 from Von Housen in Sacramento! Man, what a beast! Grinin' ear to ear everytime I drive it.
Thank you all for all the very informative threads.
Lots of knowledgable folks on this list. Tons of great E55's from this list. The E55 is amazing in stock form...more amazing with the tuning many of you have done out there.

Kudos to you for holding off on the "toy" car purchase until AFTER securing the "workhorse" and "beater" categories. I have my '05 E55 and my '92 V12 850, both of which I am convinced will vaporize upon contact with rain/dirt/snow etc. My wifey drives an '02 ML55 and is no longer willing to sacrifice her baby on inclimate days for me. I'm currently shopping for an '02 - '03 Tahoe, preferably black, preferably with the Z71 sport package. I've seen them go in the high teens and low 20s depending on mileage, but heck, just change the oil every 5k miles and a Z71 Tahoe will go to the moon! At the same time, we have had less and less snow every winter for the past 3-4 years here in Kansas City. Last year was down-right mild. Just keep burping exhaust fumes into the air and pretty soon winter will be a thing of the past?!? Anyway, I digress, CONGRATS on the new TOY!!!

Fiscal Irresponsibility
I am an absolute car nut. I spent the first 30+ years of my life having fun but going flat broke in the music industry. I am now a lawyer and the "poster boy" for yuppiue fiscal irresponsibility. No financial advisor alive would countenance the proportion of my income that I devote to "rollin" but WTF?? My wife and I don't have kids, we dont have a boat and cabin at the lake, and we rarely take trips. SO we have cool cars and a comfortable house and not NEAR as much savings as we should!! My retirement plan?? KEEP WORKING! (and always pull up in the coolest car) its an addiction.

hEY pdc - You can't take your $$$ with you...
...so why not spend it. We all have our vices. Some just cost more than others. Besides, these E55's are just irresistable.

Yes, these are some fun cars 
Love the endless torque. And the fact that you can switch it to 'comfort' mode and hand off the keys to your grandmother with no hesitation. Can't say that about too many cars that'll run 12's now can you?
My first word of advice: get the car down here to Kronen tuning in Freemont or the other guys (I'm forgetting the name, Adam, fill us in!) and have a Renntech pulley and ECU upgrade installed. HUGE bump in power for modest bucks and no loss of comfort or streetability.
Knowing that there is an extra 60-70 lb-feet at the rear wheels just waiting to be uncorked, and that all the systems are able to easily handle the extra power (transmission, brakes, etc) makes these cars even more amazing IMO. Can't say that I have the bug to chase much more power (headers, exhaust, TB, etc), but more is always better and it seems that the W211 platform is capable of handling lots more than I'm putting down without mechanical failure. Just incredible.
Say what you will about the new and improved E63, I'm much more happy with the E55, considering how much power can be unleashed well within tolerances. Not sure the same can be said for the E63, but let's see what the next few years bring. For me there is simply no replacement for huge torque. The E55 with minor mods makes my old '69 RT Charger of years gone by feel like a honda. Fun fun fun FUN!
