I've had an E46 M3 /w SMG and loved it. Like everyone else said, the gear changes are instanteneus (just like ferrari's F1 transmission) and will snap your head back for a fraction of a second! This can be quite brutal and it does feel like the transmission is going to snap in half at WOT gearshifts (thankfully, it never did)!

I haven't tried SMG3 either. I found SMGII somewhat of a fly in the ointment but despite a few annoying glitches i've heard that 3 is a great improvement. SMGII certainly wasn't wanting for immediacy in manual mode but auto mode forget it. Anyway, I can't really help here but interesting thread.
Cylinder Head would be useful for this debate but he hasn't been around for a while.

I am interested in most high quality, high performance European cars, Benzes among them. I am neither here to preach nor have I preached. Since the original poster asked a legitimate question about a car with which I have extensive experience, I contributed. I am not sure which part of this escaped you.
I was wondering since you have used it as a daily driver how hard would you think it would take for someone not used to driving the SMG transmission to get used to it? I've owned several euro cars, mostly auto transmissions and was on the market for one. Any input you could provide would be appreciated.
