Next mod- Exhaust

Thinking of upgrading my exhaust. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? I would like to keep my primary and secondary cats, but would ideally want to upgrade them to racing cats.. High flow muffler as well and maybe wider pipes. What impact will this have on my hp/tq? Thanks in advance for the recommendations and suggestions...

I recommend you have a nice muffler shop take your OEM one and cut out the resonators and gut the mufflers. You won't find better OEM systems than the one on the E55. I still haven't found one that shows any performance gains (headers aside), especially if you do not want to monkey with the cats.

Rocket,

The entire system is coming in this week. We are working extra time to finish it so local clients can listen to it. I have a lot of requests!

its just the mufflers and tips.

it is way overpriced for the quality. Unfortunately, there's little choices out there.

Not true though. I think Supersprint has a decent system.

Has anyone removed the secondary cats? Will removing them cause the check engine light to come on? I just feel that this exhaust system is restrictive and am thus trying to find ways to help the car breathe better. I can care less about sound? As a matter of fact, the quieter the better.. I like having a sleeper....

Anything you do down stream of the secondary O2 sensor will go unnoticed by the ECU. Remove away, but consider this: Modern-day cats with their open-cell technology flow well and don't cause significant HP loss. There might be a little more HP up top, but the gain may not be worth the effort or expense.

Leave the pipes alone - they are plenty big.

Your biggest restriction with your mods is the muffler on each side. Removing the restriction from a muffler usually results in increased sound. But it doesn't have to be loud. Some aftermarket mufflers sound fairly mundane at idle and when cruising and only get loud at WOT. How about mufflers from the E63 - will they fit?

What about the Eisenhaus exhaust? Their website claims about 4.7% increase in HP for an M3 with this the sport exhaust and about a 6% increase for the racing exhaust.

Do you think we could see comparable gains with our cars? Hence if I am making 481rwhp, will the Eisenhaus get me to 505hp. Seems like a lot for a muffler upgrade..

did you not see my comments about the eisenmann?? I've heard there are no power gains to be had from the eisenmann exhaust over the AMG exhaust

If that were the case, why pay $3k for a set of mufflers? Insane.. I like keeping it a sleeper...

I hear alot about gutting the OEM mufflers. What exactly is this process. Is it like gutting a cat, or do you have to split the muffler open, take out insides, weld seams back together? Please advise!

Thanks
Walter

You've surmised correctly. Dinan Engineering of BMW tuning fame has made a fortune doing this for BMW owners. Basically, you take a stock muffler, use a disc cutting tool (air powered) to cut off the top half of the muffler case (think lobotomy), and then rework the internals of the muffler. Modern high flow factory mufflers are a reflection absorption design that route the exhaust gases through a series of chambers and perforated baffles. The "gutting" can entail either completely removing the internals and replacing with a perforated tube to route the gases to the tips, or something lesser, where you may remove sections of the internals. Honestly, the high performance factory exhausts are pretty well designed and tuned to the engine. There's very little real HP to be gained from just a muffler swap or modification. It's all about the sound and maybe a little weight reduction. That's why as someone else suggested, paying $2K - $3K for an Eisenmann or Supesprint set of mufflers exhaust is rather ludicrous.

How many systems do you think they would sell if their claims said 1% increase? (probably closer to the truth) Exhaust systems do not make HP. Well-designed system lose less than poorly-designed systems. Do you think BMW would put such a poor exhaust system on one of their flagship performance cars?

With exhaust systems, it's all about reducing back pressure for maximum power. To see how much you could gain, you need to measure your back pressure during WOT. In a well-designed system, it would be less than 2 psi. If yours is near this number, you wouldn't gain much. Spend your money elsewhere.

Agree, this works very well on most MB and AMG exhausts.

I had my '05 55 done for $500. It is all in whom you take it to. If you want muffler work take it to a muffler shop, not a tuner!

What would be the disadvantages, and advantages if any, with just replacing the mufflers with a straight pipe? Has this ever been discussed? Also, Jangy, you wouldnt have any pics of your mufflers being n=modded would you? I have the tools to seperate, and weld my mufflers. I just need to know if they just remove everything inside, or install pipes..

thanks, Walter
