Jangy's Tuner lesson
Damn!! You are lucky! Thank god you caught it in time because if that crank pulley would of sheared off, you could kiss your motor good bye!
Just as an FYI.. Crank bolts should never be reused.. They are a 1-use item. You need to put a new bolt on that car if they went and removed & reinstalled the pulley. Dont leave the bolt the way it is!!!!
The proper way to install the bolt is a torque & stretch method.. Because of this, the bolt weakens after the first use. If this procedure wasnt followed, the bolt WILL back itself out and you WILL cause major damage. Just in case they didnt replace your crank pulley bolt, tell them to get you a new one!!! Part # 000-990-02-00.
Good luck and keep an eye on it for a week or two to make sure it is true & no wobbling.
Thanks for the heads up. We'll see what happens. I went with RennTech simply because of how their warranty meshes with the MB one. If they do not address my concerns, I have no choice but to go to MB and let it be what it is. If I get flagged, then I will rely on RennTech's warranty. Either way, I consider myself covered. I'm not going to have the car just sit while blame is placed. I want it fixed and fixed NOW. That isn't just for my car, but I want preventative action taken for all of my SDCrew. We got into this together and I won't have a buddy go through what I did if a little up front work could have avoided it.
Scenario #1: Original bolt has been reused. If it is the case, than it has already been stretched and will not provide adequate force to keep pulley in place.
Scenario #2: New bolt, but it has not been installed correctly. Proper installation requires torque-angle gauge. It is somewhat dificult to use on the crank due to the location and many shops and "wanna-be mechanics" just "wing it".

The result is loose bolt and pulley sliding off.
Now to the question of the day - Is there a damage to the crank?
The answer is - Very, very likely.
If you can visibly see pulley wobbling it means that it is at the edge of the woodruff key and it is grinding at the end of the crankshaft.
If you are lucky the key is repairable.
If not, you will need a new crank. Around $15,000 parts and labor.
Installing crank pulley on the Kompressor motors is somewhat delicate procedure. Woodruff key is behind the front cover and is almost impossible to see. One has to go by feel as pulley is slid on the end of the crank and it's proper position is verified against other pulleys.
It needs to be done by a professional mechanic with a proper knowledge, tools, manuals and experience.
$100 you just saved by going with a cheap shop can potentially cost you a lot more, as I highly doubt the original shop will stand behind high $$$$$$$$ repair bill.
My best wishes to you my friend.
Our cranks should have dual key ways from factory.
Sorry to hear about your day. Where is Creative located? I would be interested in having him install a couple of mods for me. That kind of customer service is rare.
I also wanted to thank you for giving Vic that visual. LOL
I have been dying to race Vic's CL. Next time let this girl tag along.
No love!!
Glad nothing bad happened to you my friend!
It is the same key that is used on a stock non-Kompressor cars. Apparently AMG decided it was strong enough to support extra 100HP load that kompressor adds.
Greg -I was thinking the same thing

dont want to get to ahead of ourselves. this is worst case scenario. even so renntech themselves do it for 9k total. hartmut himself told me this.
So I read this as an installer error not a RENNtech mistake? Got to check the installer twice and make sure your 45k motor is in good hands!
If I ever have a pulley installed I know I will order it from florida and have my shop foreman install it himself.

Rock, don't try to be the funniest guy on the board, ok? I almost choke myself to death on a sip of Nantucket Nectar Lemon Tea......

Jangy,
Glad to hear you got home safely, I and everyone else at Creative is more then happy to work out of the shop to help any of our customers. As for the pulley itself, I will get you guys a new one, theres no question about that. RENNtech themselves would also like to take a look at them.
I dop appolgize for what happened, and how it was a major inconvence for you, bu give me a call monday and we'll take it from there. If I dont hear from you by the afternoon I'll give ya a buzz.
Hope you guys all enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate and take ownership of the issue. You're DA MAN.
Glad I was wrong sorry about the last message..
I will definitely get it looked into, but I am not concerned about getting it taken care of. Maybe that is what separates Creative from the rest. You may not be used to seeing other "shops" stand behind their products, but Creative is different than that. Their business model is to grow and be a part of the community they cater to. I'm sure that my crew will be taken care of between Creative RennTech, even if this is a worst case scenario (which I do not think it is as the pulley is currently spinning true).
Rock: Normally, you are right. I did call my lawyer, but that's only because he also happens to be my brother. Hehe.
The real point is that **** happens. It is easy to give kudos to shops and tuners when all is good and well. It is how they treat you during the rough times (like this) that counts. For now, I can only say that Creative has been more than responsive to my demands (and we all know I am demanding). As long as RennTech responds in kind, I am sure that they will get it all worked out. I'm already hooked on mods and will do more as I go. If my worst case is to ship the car to Florida, then perhaps a full out stage 6 is in order? Either way, i can't look back. we are where we are and I will try to make the best of it. Given that, I'm glad that Creative is my shop and Renntech is my tuner.

Hey didnt I say that yesterday while we waited for James? Dont be stealing my lines
I mentioned to Jangy that I too had an experience not much different that what occurred to him. It was the response of the tuner and what they did for me (service) over the next few months that gained my trust and in the end- tens of thousands of dollars in business over the past 4 years.

I'm definitely glad to have had the three of you there. It was very helpful for me. I don't want to let this get to me. i'll deal with it. If the tuner screws me, then I'll scream. until then, I just gotta be happy for the positives.
I still had a blast during the few hours I had the RennTech on. It definitely brought new life to my car and it was awesome having 4 Es hauling that much butt!!
Either way, I am not concerned with "fault". I am more concerned with what will be done to make the SDCrew feel assured about continuing our plans to mod. It is a little sad to have issues this early in the process, but I'd rather test my Tuner (Creative and RennTech) now than to end up spending $15K on the car and then being pissed. For now, I can say that I will stay with Creative based simply on their response and good faith. I'm also sure RennTech will step up and take care of us as well. We'll find out soon (next week).
