I think you would need something similar to these:

http://www.ahg-electronic.de/index.h...c.de/k_232.htm

http://www.z-tronic.de/sound/zubehoer/canbusadapter.asp

http://www.aoyama-pitin.co.jp/navi/navi.html
(scroll all the way to the bottom)

Basically these translate the signal from your aftermarket HU into signals that can be recognized by your car's electronic system or vice versa.

Nah, you need one of these Pioneer made units.
http://www.pioneer.eu/files/pdf/02_CE_RC_ADAPTORS.pdf

I used a Pioneer wired adapter on my Z1 and it works great. It looks like Pioneer only makes an IR adapter for your E-class.

So, you basically lose all your steering wheel control buttons, right? The OP wants to PRESERVE the function of the buttons and the Canbus adaptor is the way to go

Huh? I just posted what you need to retain the steering wheel controls with a Pioneer unit.

I see. I thought that's one of those tag on remote controls that you clip onto your steering wheel.

No, this is a proprietary CAN bus interface made by Pioneer specifically for your car model. It has an IR emitter that you must hide somewhere and points towards your new head unit. It is too bad that it is IR, mine was wired meaning that it plugged into the back of my Pioneer.

Good luck!

Hmmm, that Pioneer IR control says its for a 99>02. Do you think that is really going to be compatible with my 03, do they use the same bus system?

any thoughts on THIS product?

That looks like it will work! Try it! It doesn't say that it works with Pioneer though.

Yeah, i contacted them and they have some newer models that are not on the website\list. and they say they have the parts to make it work. i just am weary to be a guinea pig and buy all the stuff, have my car ripped apart and have it not work. if it were cheap i wouldnt be as weary about it.

How expensive is it? The install was easy on mine. I couldn't get confirmation from anyone that mine would work, so I said screw it, bought it, and it worked.

parts from germany is $3-500. the avic is like $1600. worst case scenario is that it doesnt work and i am out the money and i no steering wheel controls. i dunno if it's worth it. i really like my steering wheel controls even if the avic is a touchscreen.

I have that dietz adaptor in my W208 CLK...it works great.

Phone Larry Perzan @

Perzan Auto Radio

Upper Darby, PA 19082
Phone: (610) 734-1234

He is very helpful. I wanted to maintain audio control through the steering wheel, & this works....there is actually less delay when skipping tracks than with factory head unit.
