E63 air intake??

Hi,
I'm looking to purchase a used E63. If I'm not mistaken, I've read somewhere on the forum that the initial E63's that came out were very much underpowered and not putting out the advertised horsepower. I also recall reading that the later model E63's had a revised air intake to increase the power to what it is suppose to be. IS THIS TRUE??? If it is, how do I know if the car's I am looking at have the revised air intake? Thanks for any help on this subject.

There were one or two early dyno results that appeared to be low, but here's proof in the numbers that the e63s are putting out the FULL 507HP...

I've posted the charts under the W211 section as well!

I am not sure these cars are under rated but I could be wrong. Changing the Air Intake/Filter will give you some more HP and its not difficult to do.

I believe the HP is 507 now but I'm wondering if the very early models had a different air intake system that was changed?? DerekFSU posted very bad 1/4 mile times with his early model E63 and I know I have read something about a revised system. This may not be correct but I'm wondering if anyone knows?? Thanks.

I asked the same question. Here is the reply I got directly from AMG:

Here is a summary of the intake manifold thread

In the AMG Private Lounge, buckeyewalt asked AMG the following:

"Is there any truth to the "rumor" that AMG redesigned their intake manifold mid-year on the E-63 engines because of the power "loss" some had experienced and written about on the other MB board?

Curious!!!!
"

Then username AMG Information replied with this:

"The M156 6.3 AMG Intake manifold has remained unchanged since the
introduction of the engine.

AMG Information
"

If you check part numbers of the intake you will see that they are the same exact part numbers.

I personally think that throughout the engine production period, a few engines will always come out producing LESS horsepower than average, and a few will produce MORE horsepower than average, but the majority should come out producing the average horsepower that they should be producing (410 to 420 whp). So, I guess it is kind of a gamble...

I'm in the same situation. I'm about to buy an E63, and I have no way of knowing whether it will be one of the strong ones, average ones, or weak ones...

i hope the 63's are doing better but if they're now making their claimed hp, i'm not sure it's been proven yet. dyno numbers mean NOTHING until backed by 1/4mile stats. the early underpowered e63's were verified to be weak with their slow 1/4mile runs and the latest "freak" dyno numbers posted all over the boards have yet to be proven at the track.

cicbenz, the hemi driver must have been pretty lousy then... a 300c would cook an E350. Intake manifold is different than an intake... so maybe AMG redesigned the intake but not the actual manifold.

I believe that most cars are putting out the stated power. Like others have said some are a little weaker and some are a little stronger but with new laws in effect I think the 507 is a legally binding minimum. Now how do you prove that? Who's going to take the engine out and measure it? No one. As stated by others running the 1/4 mile is a good way.

What kind of figures are you seeing to buy used E63's? I haven't seen any.

LOL,
Pablo

umm he did I said I hung with him, I had him by a car til' 85mph but by 120mph he had 4 cars, but since then my car got faster, I can't explain it I just know it moves really well, can't wait for the headers and exhaust and chip(maybe a little laughing gas )
