That's very interesting to see the inside/anatomy of the 55 s/c. Very informative. Thanks Fin!

Wow - those screws fit pretty tight ... whats the one that looks cream colour made of ?

That whole unit is one stressed item taking all that pressure and spinning at ~29k rpm to do so ... wow...

A few hours or so. Most of time will be used to remove the core section with care.

It will remove the core bottleneck which costs the charger a few PSI and help to free flow the plumbing.

Basically it will help to maximize the superchargers efficiency by optimizing flow.

I'm not sure... It appears to be some kind of light weight resin.

Nice post, been off the forum for sometime. I see you have been very busy. You always amaze me. Did Bob at Stiegemer, tell you my supercharger was the first 55 he did. He does good work, Just ask the Corba guys. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted.

I hope you're doing this for fun and not the 10-15hp gain? http://www.stiegemeier.com/flow_results_tb.html

Personly, I wouldn't have my charger put through the mill for only 15hp extra... So this is where synergy comes into play... Every mod added isn't responsible for a particular HP rating, although s/c porting claims 15hp, it could actually be more in conjunction with other parts.

It's the combination of mods which dictates overall performance.

So when the whole jigsaw is put together, I think there's going to be a little more than a 15hp gain.

Don't know the bloke but he seems to know what he's doing.

Seen the 55 s/c photo and wondered who's it was.

Besides doing the porting, what other work have you had done?

Cooling, Exhaust and Heads would really wake up this combination.

Have you considered adding these?

Porting Part A

Just a few update shots of port matching and obstruction removal.

-55upgrade542.jpg

Obstruction... Bye Bye...

-55upgrade543.jpg

Note the hangover.

-55upgrade541.jpg

Material removed from here. About 3mm above and the large section below.

-55upgrade540.jpg

This part will now match up with the lower section.

-55upgrade539.jpg

Flush with outlet manifold front and back. (Arrows)

-55upgrade538.jpg

Before.

-55upgrade537.jpg

After with about 5mm removed.

-55upgrade544.jpg

Some butcher markings from the die grinder.

More to come...

Wow, thats a really interessting thread. I'm following it since a while. It has nothing in common with german Mercedes boards: "...go to your dealer, he can fix your problem...". Especially at these expensive engines.
Sorry Finn, but I can't imagine any crazy person here in Germany who opens his supercharged 55 V8 on his own. Respect. I hope that I'll get to know some of those when I've got the pleasure to spend a year of studying in Sydney from the mid of July this year.

greetz from Germany to all of you giving this board life with your interessting topics!

Again great pics

Finny, one question what is the purpose of the two U shaped slots in the bottom of the blower housing? Seems like one could remove material on the outside points.

I'm not sure what these are for but it's part of the barrel where the compression occurs so I didn't want to screw around with this area. The space where the final product is delivered is where I thought some flow improvements could be made.

Only speculating here... maybe as the rooters pass over these slots pressure is released gradually to help prevent oscillation or excessive noise???

A lot of physics going on here at 20k rpm or so.

You will love Sydney, lot's going on here and plenty of car culture.

If you come past Melbourne make sure you pop in and visit.

Cheers

Is it only me or why is it that these pieces don't mate up together better with less overhangs and obstructions ... surely the die's could be made with better tolerances? 3-5 mm thats loads of "off" factor....

I suppose MB could do it but if the final spec is achieved why bother? No need to spend the extra bux to up stage the twice as much SL 65? Imagine paying half for the same power of the 65? Wouldn't make marketing sense I suppose...

Just came back from the Heads guy who informed me that he managed to flow an extra 100hp out of the heads which I'll try and get some shots soon so you guys can see what the hell they got up to. All the valve seats and valves were replaced for larger versions among other alterations.
