ECU/Codes

When you have a light that shows up in the instrument cluster, there is a code that is generated. How long does the code remain? I have an issue with my ESP and the light goes on and off at various times. I don't want to take it to the dealer and they see nothing!

When that happens to me, I usually smell burning rubber and the car's rear-end wiggles from side to side.

Joking aside, are you referring to the little yellow triangle ESP light? A couple of years ago, I had the SRS light come on. I was some sort of switch or contact point located in the steering wheel (I believe) that needed replacing. However, I have not heard of the ESP light going on and off (other than what I described).

I think that in most instances, if the car throws a code, it remains until cleared. However, I have heard/read (somewhere) that there are codes that are not saved. Not much help, I know.

............Let me take a crack at this. I have had enough ECu issues to remember that not all codes are saved. I belive if a code occurs three time or more it is saved until cleared. I don't know if this applies to all codes. If you are referring to the ESP yellow triangle, that code if there is one is definitely not saved. Asmany times as that stuff has come on in my car, it was never seen as a code the many times my ECU has been checked.

Ted: On the E63 ALL codes are saved until they get wiped out at the dealer. My problem was a wheel position sensor that was gving faulty readings to the ESP but its fixed and runs great now....

BTW, there is a engine management update for the E63.....
