Need new car advice
After this accident, I'm ready to get rid of my beast. Don't get me wrong, I love the car, but some how it's not working out between the two of us. Plus, I really can't fully utilize the 400+ horses under the hood in Boston's traffic. I had been shopping around for the past 10 weeks and finally came up with a plan:
I'll be starting my clinical rotations in medical school in July. That means I'll have to be able to get to work no matter what the weather is like. Thus, an AWD vehicle is a must. Also, this vehicle will probably be driven by my wife as well. After shopping around for a while, we decided on the 535xi sedan since it's has just been face-lifted. The car also has cool features like HUD and night vision that are not offered on a comparable E-class. It's also easy to mod the twin turbo engine to milk out some more horsepower (bump it up to ~370 range and maybe more with a cat-back exhaust)
For the weekend fun car, I was deciding between an M3 or an M6. I think M3 won this round because of its smaller size so it should be more fun to drive.
What do you think?

If I were you, I'd consider X5.... this is the only bangle-edition BMW that I like....
But the question remains.... how much $$$ you want to add on top of you beast? Not that I wish, I think you'd get hammered w/ the trade-in price, especially when the dealer knows it was in an accident. If they don't know, you may still get an offer of around $60K.... if they know, you could expect to see low 50's. For a reference, I bought practically the same car as yours except 1 year older but w/ pano for mid 50's 2 months ago.
Regardless of any cars, have you ever considered used? Look at my car... 2 years and 16K later, I got it for 40% off the MSRP. I'll let people like you
(j/k) take the 1st year hit.
I myself have been eye-ing a used '07 X5, '07 R500 (not sure why my wife likes R a lot), '07 Q7 or '07 GL to replace my C55
I think I could save at least $10-15K from new for a relatively new car (<10K and ~1 yr. old).

I understand you with regards to the trade. That's why no more buying cars out front for me. It's just not worth the hassle dealing with depreciation.

A Cayman S ordered to my own specs will cost close to 90K and a Targa 4S will be more than 120K. I really can't justify the price of these cars. Maybe the turbo, but definitely not these.

The M3 is definitely the most fun car to drive of them all. I assume you would wait until the new v8 powered one comes out later this year. The M6 is a great car, I owned it for 3 months, but you pay twice as much and it is certainyl not as fun to drive.

The P-Car is fun, but I think it's way over priced for a 300 some hp (Cayman S or Carrera S) car. At 65K fully loaded, the M3 is more practical than a P-car.

If it were me I would do a p-car. Just dont get TOO crazy with the options and you can keep a 911s price down. PLus if you need awd get the 4 option and have it all!

If I'd get a Porsche, I'd be considering a Targa 4S (loves the pano roof)
A Targa 4S with the following options is already 112K:
White ext.
Black full int. with adaptive sport seats
parking sensors
self-dimming mirrors
Tip S
Sport Chrono pkg plus
No leather or carbon parts
Bose, CD changer, Nav, phone module

if yuo get a turbo some of those options are standard. I would be hard pressed to spend ~115 on a 911 and not get a turbo for 10-15 k more.
I like the targa looks as well. but not as much as the turbo.
I have to admit I have the first 08 turbo coming to my family dealership so I am a bit biased.
I drove s6 and s8 as rs4 on the same day and by far my favorite was the rs4. the s6 and s8 were WAAAAY to docile. the rs6 coming next year will be sweet but i hate waiting!

Definately get the Targa 4S over the BMW. Perfect daily car!

'07 Porsche 997TT
Would not spend 115 on the targa - turbo (as you probably know) starts at 123 nicely optioned with some discounts starting to show up.
should have my TT in less than two weeks - boat is due in next Friday.

[QUOTE=Kev04C320;2214457]I had a deposit down for a turbo coupe with DSG (PDK), but don't think they're coming out until some time next year. Maybe I should just get the 5 and wait until then.[/QUOT
maybe 2008.5 for the DSG. PLus they are going to bump up power on the NA 911's then as well. I have to get a tip 911 as well as my wife will want to drive it. I am bit scared that the first gen porsche dsg tranny may be a bit sketchy. I hate the tranny's in the M-cars.

The DSG has been implemented in Audi, VW, and Bugatti already, and so far the reliability is pretty good. It feels more like an AT than an MT though. It definitely doesn't feel like the SMG, at least with my experience on the GTI.

IMO the e46 m3 will suit your needs. Has plenty of power, and maneuvers fine in the city. Also youll be able to get compact car parking. The car is a blast to drive. Then when youre ready to mod it , there are tons of them out there.
