The last set of tires I got on the tire company used nitrogen. They fill them up whenever I need it. They claim better pressure retention..

The main benefit is that it leaks down through the rubber more slowly than air because nitrogen is a larger molecule than oxygen. But since air is 80% nitrogen, the effect is small. The other touted effect is less pressure variation with tire heating. This is caused by water vapor in air, which expands more rapidly with heat than other constituents of air. This will be less of an issue in dry climates than humid ones, and the benefit presumes that the nitrogen has been dried before bottled. It's not true that NASCAR team universally use nitrogen. Some do while some believe it's a myth.

To each his own.

All Jet air craft are FAA required to use nitrogen in all tires.
My TPMS now works with unreal accuracy.
I use it in our inflatable RIBs and get less pressure drop at night.

To me the biggest benefit is the thermo stability.

I didn't know that about the jets - cool.

+1 on the thermostability. On a set of R-comps, there was about a half-PSI increase after a full track session, as opposed to almost six (from cold) with an air fill.

Not all of the Bmw guys are full of it. Just the ones that frequent our boards, it seems.

Not only does it have all the mentioned benefits but it is also suppose to keep your tires cooler while in use. All the benefits are suppose to add up to less tire wear. I have had it for about a year.

Here in southern MI our Discount Tire shops all use nitrogen for new tires. Better thermal stability, slight improvement in gas mileage and less mucking with the pressures over the seasons-Joker

I have been using a 78% nitrogen mix in my tires since the 1960's and haven't had any problems. I'm a big fan.

On a serious note, I questioned using helium, it's enert and lighter than air. But the thermal stability is poor. It expand and contract dramatically. Your tire pressure changes too quickly.

But that's not why I'd put it in my tires!
