coolant. there is some trouble with leaking intercooler cores that leak after the car is off but the system is still presurized. you can check this issue in various ways but if it is leaking you will need a new core. the coolant just leaks into the combustion chamber and is burned off once you start the car. Too much liquid in there and you can bend a rod though.

it could be a simpler problem... that the air filter for the cabin (we call it cupé filter in swedish, not sure about the english name) - it sits behind a panel under the glove compartment, needs replacing. Basically over the time it has been used, stuff gets stuck in it, and when there is no airflow (the car is off) the junk in the filter "goes stale" and starts to smell.
It usually takes less than 30secs for the smell to come and go, so its not bad, and shouldf you want a replacement, it should cost you about $100...

My W210 E55 has been smelling sweet for the last year. I had work done on the AC for leaks in the system and I thought it might be freon smell but the smell never goes away even after many times of airing out the car. The smell is very strong in the trunk. I only have 36k miles and have never changed the dash air filter. I hope it is not some type of fume with adverse affects.
