E63: Brake noise

Hi guys
I need your help on brake noise on E63
The dealer replaced pads and said that pads were glazed.
They told me to use brake harder to avoid glazing.
6000 miles on the pads, the noise is back
I am taking the car for service this Friday.
What should I ask them to do to fix the problem?
Are there any E63 with similar problems?
Should I use after market pads?
The noise is pretty bad when I am slowing down to stop.
I've tried everything.
Help please!

I have the same problem and my service provider said that its because they use race pads. Advised me to shoot them off with water real good and the sound will go away. This is true everytime I wash the car, but it comes back. I have had similar probs with previous vehicles and race brake setups.

So your saying there is something they can do about it? I don't want cheaper pads so save sound, I bought the car for performance.

And whats this I found in TSB:
P-42_46-43 JUN 04 Brakes - Squeaking Noise On Application
Does this not sound more like his problem? Where did you find your TSB?

Had the rear brake pads replaced under the service action and the noise is better. Was not aware that they had a front pad service as well. To anyone concerned the car brakes the same with the service. Will update you on the front pad squeal when I have that service done. Hopefully that fixes the problem. HATE the brake noise.

noise

my SA told me they have a special application lube which may or may not help reduce noise. it will cost me $100. I was not comfortable with that answer, frankly I have been real dissapointed with my SA lately.

Hi guys
I just got a call from the dealer and they said that there is new brake pad for E63. It suppose resolve brake noise. They said that there are new parts number for the pads(both front and rear).
I have not pick up the car yet due to transmission leakage.
I will try the new pads and hopefully this will resolve the noise issues.
What do you guys think?
Anybody heard of new pads from MB?

Yes, the DTBs that sunil@motorwerks referred to are for new pads.

The new pads work great and no more noise.

What exactly is happening with your transmission leakage? Any symptoms or drivability/performance issues?

I do not know anything yet.
I spotted some oils in my garage so asked them to check for me.
They said something about transmission leakage. I will know more when I pick up the car tomorrow.
However I did not notice anything before I took it to the dealer.

I had my car in last week and my dealer told me my car was not in the VIN range for the TSB (actually any of them) so although my brakes are loud as hell most of the time they will not replace the pads. Does anyone know what I might be able to do to make this happen?

My 03 E55 does the SAME thing. Light braking, squeaks. HARD breaking- NO noise. SA told me to use them hard to get rid of rust/and or dust build up. He said a lot of E55s do the same, not something to worry about. HOWEVER- it IS annoying, especially since I live in the city.

Have any 06 55 found a solution to this?
  • other then hard breaking?
  • and not washing ur wheels (when they really need a good blasting to make them shiny again )

Sometmes the squeal is from glazed brake pads which a hard braking session should clean up ... sometimes it becase the calipers' pistons are sticky and the caliper does not allign properly to the disc under light pressure.... Also on some split discs the rotor can vibrate against the hat if the attachments are a little more flexible than they should be ... in this case nothing you can do except going for a better split disc... or going back to a solid disc...

If no1 does not work try 2... check pistons are not stuck.

If all else fails just get the Brembo GT pack ... got drilled and slotted varaints ... but you will need 19" wheels.

I'm sitting in my dealer's service area (Ray Catena @ Edison, NJ) as I type.

I'll let you know...I've had this problem for 3 months or so. A few weeks ago I called to make an appointment for the TSB and when I got there they didn't know one existed. So I pointed out the number to them and the SA thanked me for the information (although his mechanic tried to do a CYA by saying it wasn't the rears, it's the fronts). Great, then the SA comes out and says they don't have the pads anyway, he'll order them. So away I go and now I'm back, waiting for them to be installed, and now I hear there's a TSB for the FRONTS as well. Fat chance getting them installed now, they probably won't know about the new TSB until I tell them.

Fair warning: before you go to the dealer to get this done make SURE they know a TSB exists and they have the pads!

Sunil posted them earlier in the thread (it's not that I don't want to repeat them, I just don't have them handy).

And BTW, the squealing does seem to have stopped. How long it will last I don't know, but this confirms it WASN'T my front brakes (which the SA insisted were the only ones squealing) since nothing was, supposedly, done to them today.

So get your free pads, if only to stick it a little back to MB.

i had the rear pads replaced as per the TSB. The dealer seemed to have them in stock. The fronts were ordered and will have them installed next Monday. Just with the rears the sqealing has been reduced almost completely. Hope after the fronts it is 100% gone.

FYI the service department said, and I quote, "How the heck did you get this info (re:the TSB's)" Told them I know people in high places. Thanks forum members for the info. It's us vs. them.

Yea, wish my Service Dept. was as cooperative as yours. When I asked about the fronts the SA said we'd have to wait to see how the rears worked out. When I asked if he could ORDER the fronts so he'd have them in stock just in case he wasn't sure. Time to find someone else. No need to waste my time begging them to show some interest in a $90,000 car.

Hi guys
I talked to SA and told me that front pads are same as before.
He said that there is a new part for front brake caliper.
It suppose to apply even pressure to the pad. He said that uneven pressure to
the pads caused noise.
I am confused. So are there new front pads?

Clarification:

P-B-42.46/43 released 6/24/04 – 211.026/065/070/076/082/083/265/282/283, MY03-05 checks for air in the SBC system if a squeaking noise is heard when gently applying brake.

Brake squeal:

P-B-42.10/51e released 2/16/06 (initial release 12/5/05) – 211.056 up to production 6/04, 211.070, 219.375, 171.456, 203.065/076, 209.376/476 up to production 6/04, 209.375/475, 215.375/376/378, 220.067/170/175/176/178, 230.475 corrects front brake squealing/grinding noise by installing revised pressure retaining springs, piston damper, and latest pads.

*** P-B-42.10/76 released 7/19/07 – 211.077 (e63), 219.377 (cls63), 230.472 (sl55) and 230.479 (sl65) installs new rear pads (part # A005 420 22 20) to resolve brake squeal.

*** P-B-42.10/79 released 9/20/07 – All 211 models, all MYs resolves front/rear brake squeal by first applying brake paste and if this does not solve the squeal pads will be replaced with the latest MBUSA part number.

I am not aware of any new e63 front pads or caliber parts and EPC (MBUSA electronic parts catalog) does not list any part revisions. Possibly Ckim1021 can get the new part number(s) or associated bulletin from his SA to confirm this.
