S600 rear goes BOOM after 10.91@126.78 pass

I had the opportunity to go to the track today and had a mishap. After dialing in my N20 and running a 10.91@126.78 with a 1.65 60' the rear end made a loud pop and there was no power to the rear wheels. Upon further inspection there was a nice puddle of gear lube forming on the track just beyond the 60'. The pinion shaft completely sheared from the pinion gear and the driveshaft was disconnected from the rear itself. So, it is now time to upgrade to some sort of LSD and a new ring and pinion. The air was perfect today but I never run well at Virginia Motorsports Park and this proves that point.

Is the S55 Rear the same as the S600?? Or is the S55 stronger?

This gives a whole new meaning to "oh snap!!"

Drives Slowly
On the bright side, a sub 11sec run keeps us E55 guys envious.

That sucks.

Our cars are very heavy, so when you add a lot of torque and traction to the mix it puts enormous strain on the drive-train.

If I could find an S65 rear without adding a second mortgage then I would do it. The car behaved strangely in the burnout box feeling as if one side was spinning then the other with a few audible thumps in the process. After rolling to the line and lighting the prestage and stage bulbs, I preloaded the car to approx 1800-2000rpms and then clunk. I did try to leave that time on the NOS but it is not violent by any means. Probably just too much torque for the factory parts. Think I can wedge a 9 inch ford rear with a quick change under my S?

Not sure about the rears between the S600 and S55 but my gut instinct is that they are the same. Not sure if an E class rear and an S class rear are different either?

Looks like the S65 and S600's have the same rear ends and gear ratios. The S63 has lower gear ratio and different part number but i bet the housing is possibly the same.I would think Mb would put the strongest diff in the S65,and it has the same part number as the S600 so looks like a dead end for going bigger and stronger for you.

I'll check the CL,but I doubt its better.

The only stock non performance packge with an LSD is the SL65.

You could probably now order a LSD from a SL55, E55/E63 or CLS55/63 at our local dealer since it is now a part of the performance package 030.

No S or CL has a LSD in the US.

Cheers!

new balance
gdamnit, this isn't good news. The CL rears are no different, they are all the same only the sl65 has lsd which I believe does nothing for strengthening, someone please correct me if I am incorrect. If I read correctly the temps were in the low 40's most of the day, not sure which pill you ran but if you ran your largest in that weather i would theorize you would be making over 850ft/lbs to the rear wheels, that level of TQ plus the shear of the weather was not a good condition obviously.

The temp at VMP was 52 and the DA was approx -400ft. I had the 150 pills(LS1hp) in it at that time. No different technique than previous runs but as I said previously it was doing something in the burnout box that probably led to its demise. At the starting line it felt like preload and thump/clunk....nothing. I do believe that if I had LSD then both tires would always spin in the burnout box and the torque would be more evenly distributed to both wheels. That in itself would be beneficial. Maybe one of the aftermarket Quaife LSD's would be a solution with the standard parts.

My understanding is that the LSD in the SL65 is different than the other 65 cars.

I can't confirm it but I was told that the standard diff is aluminum and the SL65 actually has a steel housing and beefed up half shafts.

Cheers
