S600 broken rear pic

I just finished the removal of the rear pumpkin which can be removed without doing anything other than unbolting the axles from the rear housing. Amazingly I have the car on ramps and I didn't even have to take the wheels off. Once the exhaust is removed, everything is easy access. The most difficult thing was getting the proper size tools. The rear housing (pumpkin) is held to the chassis with only three large through bolts. Two of them have an 18mm head and the other is larger than 24mm(my largest mm socket) but a 15/16" socket/wrench fits it perfectly. My buddy works at a corporation that does lubricant testing on rear ends, transmissions, and engines and his company has an account with the local MB dealer for the parts. Also, his company has all of the proper tools to set up the rear. Looks like I'll probably go with the Kleeman style limited slip setup and a new ring and pinion. I haven't opened it up yet but it felt like a spider gear was popping as I rotated the axle. It still turns free but it is not smooth. I'll keep you guys posted with details on parts and prices.

My only input on the Klee LSD is the famous "clunk". Klee LSD runs around 60% lock if I am not mistaken. Not that you do it much, but if you turn a corner at an intersection and throttle it, you'll get the LSD clunk which can be kinda scary.
Car is trying to turn those pups (wheels) independant and LSD is trying to hold um together. Really sounds scary when the gears slip. Can't be good for it.
Asked um what can be done about it and was told pretty much it's inherent of the classic LSD design. Then was told, "Ehhhh, just don't do that"
With your massive torque and extra weight, you'll clunk it big time on turns. Gotta be careful. Otherwise, it's pretty bulletproof.

It only lists the W211 2003-. I have no idea if I have a 215 rear or what is in my W220 S600. I haven't called them to ask yet but the Kleemann is out if a clunk is in my future. Thanks for the info as I almost jumped the wrong way.

Well, just off the phone with Quaife and it doesn't look good. Doesn't show a unit for the S classes. He does have a unit for an SL 600 so we would have to figure out in Benz is using the same rear on the SL600 that they use on the S600.
Otherwise, we may be out of luck on the Quaife Stephen.
Sure gave it the ole college try for ya.

here is the info concerning my broken rear. Nothing is broken in the rear itself such as spider gears or anything at all. My friend has informed me that everything else is pristine besides the pinion itself which cleanly rung off. I have decided that the Kleemann diff is my only choice as Quaife makes nothing for my car. I have pm'ed two members here with their Kleemann upgrades and they seem to be very happy with the mod. Hopefully it will work out for me as well. $2300 is a little steep but it is the same price everywhere. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress. The differential has to be shipped to Kleemann in Colorado where Cory does the mod and sends the differential back ready to be reinstalled. Of course I need to order a new ring and pinion from the MB dealer (2.65 ratio). The ring and pinion runs about $1K.

Maybe you can look into this http://mikronite.com/dyno.asp
it's a form of hardening, here is another link with some info http://www.vincihighperformance.com/...IN%20PAGE.HTML
It couldn't hurt imho.

You'll be totally fine with Klee. It was actually a little silly of me to even bring that up. How many times do we actually turn a corner and just hammer it anyway. No worries Stephen. Can't wait to see what times you run now.
Not sure what to do when you run 10.5's. Think without a huge pipeline of NOS, we 55 guys won't be able to climb that low.

just sent the differential to Kleemann. They said turnaround is quick with only 1-2 days in their shop. Ring and pinion + seals, bearings, etc have been ordered. Don't know the complete price for the damage but I am thinking in the 4K range after everything is complete. Of course Kleemann's LSD sets you back $2300.

Stephen,
Just a suggestion here, Be sure to check your differential, transmission & engine mounts and the mount points in the car. I think it was Finny, who twisted his third member out of the car, mounts still attached to the diff.

thanks for the tip...I'll be sure to check them closely when I reinstall the rear.
