Question Transmission question

Tried a search and could not find anything on this and it may be normal.

I noticed sometimes when I go WOT and then quickly need to slow down (thus removing foot from gas pedal) the car stays in whatever gear I am in for an extended period of time before shifting again.

It is really weird seeing 4-6K RPMs stay an extended period of time without upshifting. Never does this except during WOT encounters.

Is this normal when driving in S mode?

Thanks for the help.

You know what? I think that is normal. My first response was "no." But then I actually sat back and thought about my experience: I think the computer knows you are trying to slow down and thus leaves it in downshift mode.

A very fine distinction, however: in normal "in-town" or "heavy stop and go-type" traffic, the computer seems to know when to upshift.

Not sure if this is making sense.

Guys: fill in the missing pieces here.

It has been mentioned here only a few times, I had a quite a different experience than the one you describe. In my case WOT and lift @ 5K RPM gave me a neck snapping up shift. It only happened once, But other members here have had it happen.

what mode are you driving on? Sport mode seem to shift at higher rpms. Try driving on comfort mode also and see if there's any difference.

Haven't had that happen. But I have had it stay in gear I was in at WOT even after letting off the gas...is about a 5 second delay as it stays in that gear which is usually somewhere around the 5K RPM range or so.

Was just wondering if it was normal or I needed my dealership to look at it.

Thanks!

Its pretty normal. After a WOT run, when you let off the gas the car will hold the gear because it might think you're going to get right back on the gas again. I noticed this with AMG and non-AMG CLK's, SL's, E's, and S's. The first couple of times it happened to me I thought it was weird too but there are times where I am happy it does that because after going around a curve, I'll mash the throttle again and the car instantly sends you flying as you don't need to downshift.

Yes, when in S mode, the car wants to provide you max performance, so I think it prepares itself by staying in gear predicting that you will get back right on it again. So it holds the gear for just a little longer (5 seconds maybe pushing it though, I would say 2 to 3 seconds is what I've experienced) so that you don't lose the time between shifts. This is part of the AMG adaptive transmission feature. The transmission is always trying to use the past recorded data to predict what you will do next. Sometimes this helps, but sometimes it hurts big time.

haters crazy
It holds gears after a WOT blast because of the adaptive transmission and thinks you want to drive agressively. Its perfect for roadcoursing because you dont have to wait for the shift and the power is instant. I love it!
