it also depends on the size of the rims/tires. even more offset is needed the wider you go. what i have found to be optimum with 255/35/19 on 19x8.5's is 34-36mm for front and with 285/30/19 on 19x10's is 38-40mm for the rear.

By wore out you mean they were rubbing on something and had to be replaced? Offset shouldnt affect tire wear unless something is significantly wrong..

Exactly correct. If you use a 9 inch front you can get a 265 or even 275 to fit with an ET 39. Rear works best at an ET of 40 on a 9.5 inch wheel. If you go to a 10 inch wide wheel you need to go to 42 or so to fit with a 285. 295 can fit at your own risk. That is the max rear tire size however. No 305's without body work.

My "OEM" Setup: Nice and cushy with decent grip.
Front: 275/35s on 9X18et39 (OEM rears)
Rear: 295/30s on 9.5X18et37 (shaved OEM SL550 rears)
My favorite setup:
Front: 265/35s on 9X18et35
Rear: 295/30s on 10X18et42
Am talking to HRE about swapping to 9.5 fronts and 10.5 rears, keeping same tire sizes. Front offset to be 37, rear stays at 42.

I think my wheels are 8.5 x19 and 9.5 x 19, I ran 35mm in front and 40mm in rear and Brabus said that may have contributed to poor tire wear and the correct offset for the car with the tires I ran should have been 29mm in front and 35 in rear. Still waiting on new spacers for the front from Brabus.

why so big tires ?
i drive 9x20 ET30 with 245/30 20 and 285/25 20 on 10,5x20 ET35
or you want grip ? You can the e55 drive with 235/35 19 and 265/30 19, looks nice
for drag races you can than buy slicks

I don't care what anyone says (no disrespect to brabus), but I have the offsets figured out on this body. the offsets you are saying they suggest wouldn't allow for much meat on your rims. Aggressive look, maybe but I'd rather have wide tires with no rubbing.

Why? Look at any car putting down 450ish HP and see if they run tires narrower than 305s. This is a heavy car with huge TQ and HP. Wide tires will help lots more than they will drag on the power. Try it out. it makes a whole new experience for the car.
