E63/08 cant rev past 3K while in park
Hi, just tried to rev the engine and found I could not do it past 3K or so while the car is in park, is that by design? if so why?

They put a rev limiter on all cars when they are in park... Happens on my E55 as well. Just start driving, when you are doing like 5 mph, put it in neutral, rev and listen...

I wanted to hear the exhaust note, but could not rev it up high enough. Will try from a roll, thx. Could easily do it on my SL55/2004.

I'm pretty sure it's normal. There was a video on YouTube where they couldn't get an E63 past 3k RPM either.
What I find interesting is that they lowered it to 3k RPM when it used to be 4k RPM.

I was trying to calibrate my Gtech pro a few weeks ago, on my 06 S65, and it would also rev to 3K max. My cousins S55 revs to 4k max. Who knows.

It's just another example of MB covering their butts and eliminating any resultant warranty claims. That's also why the shift quality is so soft. So you don't shock their underrated driveline components.

Neutral is a driving mode - you should be clear of obstacles if you are in neutral - i.e. if you were to accidentally shift into D - you shouldn't deploy airbags in your garage.
Park is meant for when the car is STOPPED. Why would they WANT to allow the engine to rev and then some idiot to hit the shifter and blast through their garage leaving 10 foot burnout marks?
I do not believe that it's a warranty issue - it's a safety / stupidity issue.
Revving the motor in park / neutral is of marginal effectiveness anyway - as there is no load on the engine and that changes exhuast note, etc.
