Buy a 996 Turbo, call Evolution Motorsports, talk to a guy named Nate, and ask for a GT740 kit. You won't be disappointed. It will outrun and out handle an E 55, not to mention when you drive it nicely, it gets much better mileage than the E. A good thing when gas is $4.50 a gallon.

Since my uncle took me for a drive in his brand spanking 930 way back in the 80's I was hooked on P-cars. Had some spins (as passenger) in some 935's regular / flat nose etc with awesome acceleration... I still remember not being able to move my body forward under hard acceleration.... what a rush for a kid!
Now I am | grown up kid ... but still long for that roller coaster blast off.
One day....

Lorenzo, you won't be impressed with the acceleration on stock 996 turbo.
But, once you chip it and do other simple mods (K24/18gs, coilover, GT3 seats, exhaust, etc) it will transform into a different car~
I had the same impression when i first drove it, but after driving all my friend's modded 996tts (simple to 650 kit) , i changed my mind right away.
Then again, it is totally up to your taste and decision~

Yeap...you can get like 650 HP package from Vivid racing for less then 10k and it will be a beast...

I have a 993 TT, and it is awsome. Here is the issue with the 996, and 997 IMO they are too civilized. Now if you want a great car and are not going to put a lot of miles on it get a 993TT, you will be impressed. If you want a newer model, but still want the feel of a old p-car get the GT3. They are not as fast on paper, but they feel quicker if you know what I mean. Now if you want a car to scare you a bit, get a 997 GT-2 and hold on for dear life. They are down to about $100K with low miles.
Having said that i have had several p-cars, and by far the best driving car in there current line up is the cayman. On paper the specs are not great, but it is a blast to drive.
If you want a rocket ship, this is what you do. Buy a older Boxter that is in good condition, exchange the motor with a crate 911 motor. There are several shops that do the conversion. Porsche made the engine mounts the same, because they thought at one point they wouild offer the 911 motor in the boxter, but then realized they would not sell any 911 convertables.

2004 E55 AMG
I too am leaning towards the 997, just waiting for it to drop down in price. the interior shows a build quality that i have yet to see in another car. everything is so tight and perfect. plus they went back to the OG head lights. slapp the new GT3 body kit and carbon wing and you will have one sick car.
to me the e55 would be hard to part with. so much power with so much comfort is a rare find. that will be the first thing you notice when you switch to another car. I have rubber bands on my car and the ride is still comfortable.
the SL65 is a big step up, but like BMW the Porsche is made to carve up canyons. While the Merc is an autobahn cruiser and freeway god.
