BMWs are a feeler's car. You definitely have to drive them to appreciate them. I'd say at leat give the E63 a chance and drive it as well. If you still ike the M5, then do whatever you want. We argue subtleties here. In the end, they are all cars.

M5 flies. Not a stoplight racer but on the hwy it has supreme pickup. Handles very well and an involving drive with the paddle shift manual.
Go for it

As others have mentioned, there are trade offs.
Be prepared to be fully required to drive the car to get the most out of it. The cars roar but they have a sweet spot delivery above 6k rpms. If you love to drive and like to have low gas mileage, great steering and brake feel, the car is for you!!
I love my M6 but launching it is an art not too many have mastered. I call it a premeditate speeder requiring one to plan his or her attack versus the mash and go qualities of the torque heavy 55's and 65's. The exhaust note on the M's is amazing and slap on an aftermarket exhaust and the stereo is no longer needed. You will find your self loving every minute of the exhaust symphony. The cars really move at higher speeds (over 100). At first when I test drove the M5 (I got the M6 but first drove the 5) I was highly skeptical since I was so used to heavy TQ delivery and low end/dig runs. But since my initial ownership the car has changed my mind. I miss my E55 and CL65 but this car leaves me with no regrets.
Both AMG and M make incredible cars that 99% of the population only dream about owning.

so this is actually my 1st post , but i've been a lurker for years !!
anyway i have an m5 now and have just done a lease transfer after 2 years , just took all my mods off yesterday the cars still in my garage but its goin at the end of the week !!
im a huge bm'er fan and have had 5 in the last 6 years , the car is awesome but a couple things you must know !!
gas sucks , it only has a 15 gallon tank so if you drive alot you'll need to hit the gas station every day !! i was averaging bot 10 mpg
the car lacks serious low end grunt , i did a dinan rear difff with 3.91 gears , it helped but still felt like i needed another 80 foot lbs of torque !!
the smg tranny is great @ wide open throttle with break neck shifts a little dangerous cause you need to take the trac control off to get in the fastest shift program !!
in traffic and in slower shift prog's the smg is way clunky and slowww..
the handling is amazing ,,, hands down
and as been said its a very involved car , if you wanna just get in and drive you can't you must always be involved with shfting etc..the standard drive mode sucks in 2 years of ownership i have never let that mode shift for me more than maybe 5 times !!
so anyway im now in the market for an e63 just got bored i guess, and really annoyed about the gas situation !! i can afford the gas just not stopping at the gas staion every day !!

I drove both the M5 and the E63 when I was selling my C55 and obviously ultimatly went with the MB e63 power is much stronger feeling. The handling wasnt so much more superior, in the M5, that it made my decision easy. The MB IMO is the better all around car. I think it looks cooler too!
Funny thing is when I goto both dealerships the BMW dealer seems to be much more snobier then when I visit the MB dealer. Not sure why but when I goto the BMW dealer its like they always have a chip on their shoulder and their nose up in the air. The folks at the MB dealer I thought were more down to earth.
...my 2 cents....

2006 E55 BEAST
Only other car I was thinking about when I got my E was the M5. I didnt need the better steering, and the tranny blows for city driving IMO, and the low end toque of the 55 just captured me. No other car has ever given me the thril that the 55 has, not even a 996TT. If you like the M5, I say go for it, a beautiful piece of machinery. Just make sure you wont kill yourself when you need to use the iDrive, it drives me nuts when I drive my friends 5 series.

You're M5 was definitely a beauty though. Surprised your getting rid of it.
