e500 wagon 4matic vs e55 wagon - from a dig

I did a search before posting and I found a few older threads on this topic that did not give me any insight on what I really want to know. I did find a very heated thread regading the difference in the handling and performance between the regular and e55 AMG sedan.

Pre-owned e55 wagons are rare where e500 4matics are not - relatively speaking. I don't see myself driving 100+ and or racing head to head starting at 75mph. I'm interested in a real world stop light to stop light, slow rolling starts and your occasional freeway on ramp performance. The price differential is approx $10K - 15K between the two. Does the e500 give up much? Will the four wheel drive system make up in traction from a dig what it gives up in HP and Tourque? I'm not interested in modding the e500. Now if AMG could add 4 wheel drive....

I would think if stop light to stop light was your concern the 55 would be the near perfect choice.

Once you learn to launch these babies with some nice tires, whether ps2's or the more extreme Toyo888's or Drag Radials, it's a piece of cake to launch.

You just don't stomp on it. Most of the launch problems you hear on the forum are just adrenaline problems. You got a guy reving his engine next to you and the heart is pumping and BOOM, most guys just stomp it.

Once you get over the fact that the 55 will almost always lose the first split second off the line, then DESTROY most opponents for the rest of the race with that devastating torque, you understand the 55.

Bottom line, with the current horsepower wars being waged, 305hp/339tq just ain't gonna get it done today for most good stop light races. 500hp (the 55 has 500 and not the 476 quoted) / with 516 of tq will still get you the W on quite a few.

In the real world, most mods are extremely cheap compared to ours so just about every Stang/Camaro and STI is going to be running something. For me, losing to an Audi S4 in my E500 stock to stock is why I am here today.

My 2 cents.

E55 wagon even in C mode will rape an E500 from a dig,or anywhere else for that matter. There is no comparison;your talking almost a 200lb/ft advantage for the 55 vs E500

To 60 mph, the E55 Wagon actually posted quicker times stock for stock versus the sedan, due to the extra weight over the rear wheels.

The E55 wagon is well worth the extra bucks. Not even close in a drag-race. In the real world, the wagon may well show better than our E55 sedans, since the extra weight makes it easier to hook up off the line. More than beating another wagon, you'll find yourself embarasing pure sports cars in what could be the ultimate sleeper dragster .

Seriously, you won't regret buying the E55 wagon. It is an incredible car with insane power. You will laugh every time you put your foot deep on the throttle. Add to this the extra-big brake calipers and you'll thank yourself for spending the extra money.

I had an E500 4matic wagon for about a year which I traded for an E55 wagon. As everyone has noted, the power difference is pretty dramatic. I personally never felt the E500 wagon was underpowered but you are not going to win any stop light races with it.

If you can’t find used wagons to drive, I would suggest driving an E500 and E55 sedan which should give you a pretty good idea as to the difference.
