E55 AMG
VIN question

Do AMG cars have a specific vin number. (i.e. if you can tell if a benz is an AMG from the VIN)

It's part of the VIN (diff on every AMG chassis), which is why if you ever signed up for the AMG PL then you'll have to submit your VIN in order for your car to be verified as an authentic original AMG model.

what part of the vin differentiates the AMG?
i.e. what combinations of numbers and letters should i be looking for in the VIN, and where?

I'm not 100% sure but my assumption is the 4th to the 10th/11th digits in the standard 17-digit VIN, since they mostly all start with WDB and end in the last 6 or 7 digits as its build sequence on the assembly line. Can someone else chime in to dissect and elaborate?

i dont think there is a specific character that identifies it as an AMG, unless they are doing it by assembly plant. it is probably listed on the line set ticket, which they need the VIN# to get.

AMG cars do not have a specific letter/number that designate it as being an AMG, it is discernable in most cases by a combination of digits from a VIN in conjunction with production info.

Not sure what the differences are, but there most certainly is a way to tell by VIN only. That is all you have to provide to become an AMG private lounge member, so they at least, know the differences. I still have paperwork on my old W210 E55, E430, SLK55, etc., so I'll see what I can figure out when I get home. Otherwise, I'm sure this could be answered by the private lounge.

Yes there is a way to tell if the vehicle is an AMG by the vin #. It would be the two numbers that designate the engine for the car. The 6th and 7th number are the engine designation for the vehicle.

For example- WDBUF[B]74[B]XXXXXXXXXX would be an E55 sedan

All though not all 55kompressor cars are 74 as I believe some SL55 are a 71. So it is somewhat dependant on what the rest of the vin is.

In short, if you have an E class vin with 6th and 7th #'s being 74 than you have an E55k, or an E class vin and the 6th and 7th are 77 you have an E63.

Hope that was somewhat understandable to read.

I have a 2001 E55 (therefore it has the n/a 5.5)
Mine has "74" for the 6th and 7th digits... so I assume that 74 represents all w210 E55 + w211 E55k

It is dependant on rest of the vin. The 6th and 7th are just the engine designation. The 4th and 5th numbers designate the chassis.

A C32 and a E320 both have a 65 for the 6th and 7th but the 4th and 5th are different. So again dependant on the rest of the vin.

Checking the 6th and 7th #'s is pretty much just a good way to identify a real AMG versus a poser AMG. So if it says E55 AMG on the back but the 6th and 7th vin #'s are 70 or 65 you know that it's really a E500 or E320.

Again, I hope I explained this in an understandable manner.
