Possible E55 Purchase
This is my first post but I have been logging in everyday for the last couple of months. I have an itch to get into an E55. Don't know why really, just really love the looks and the power. I have been a beemer guy for a while and currently have an e60 M5 and E46 M3 for the track. I seem to change cars often (I think its a disease) so the M5 may be on the outs. I will not ask the "is this a good deal question" because that is for each individual to decide.
Here's my question. The E55 I am looking at is a 2006 with 19K miles, Silver over black (I can't do another black car, way to hard to keep clean). Options include Navi, Pano, keyless go, Dyn Seats, Vent Seats, Sunshades. No park or distronic. The car was in a small fender bender and the hood was resprayed (original hood still on the car) and currently looks like crap. If I move forward with the car they will re-spray the hood for me. I negociated the price so far to 49,000. In service date was March 2006 so there is a nice amount of factory warranty. So, the million dollar question is........ how much does a carfax that shows an accident affect value? In doing research the 49K seems to be a good deal but I am asking for trouble when I go to sell? Overall the car is in excellent shape. Interior looks almost brand new and other than the hood the outside looks really nice and clean. Your thoughts, comments, etc. are appreciated.

Michael
Seeing as how you change cars often, I would probably wait and see what else comes along. The depreciation on these cars is bad and you have an update to the e class in 2010. Further, with the amount of e63's I am seeing out there in about a year or less you will be able to get a really nice pre-owned e63 for mid-50k from an MB dealer.
Also, when you go to sell this car prospective buyers will need to trust you that it was only the hood that was damaged. Now, you will be at a minimum, the 2nd owner and a buyer will figure that the person that sold you the car minimized the damage and/or that you are minimizing the damage.
My personal opinion on these cars is that you only want a really clean example, meaning...under warranty or CPO from a MB dealer, one owner, clean car fax, under 30k miles, that would be the basics. I can live without some of the options but mechanically it needs to be 100%. I mean $50k is still $50k.
I have only been here for a couple of weeks, but have read enough to see how some of these cars are driven, hence the standards above.
My advice would be to look at 2005 MY, better deals out there and possibly higher miles.
If you really want the car, low ball him....say $40k cash and see if he bites. My feeling is $49k is too high given the history. Keep in mind you need to hedge against a loss when you sell.
