After 3 days parked, pronounced ticking / tapping on startup ...

Hi Guys...

I have a new C63 with 450 miles. I'm still getting used to the noises it makes and trying to determine what's normal and what might not be normal.

I left the car parked over the weekend and upon startup today, I heard what sounded like a noisy valve (or ?) that was very pronounced. It would increase with engine rpm. I haven't heard this noise before, so... it had me a little concerned. I drove about a mile to the gas station, shut down, filled up, and restarted (yes the car was already empty, again ) On restart, the car was still just as noisy, so I figured it wasn't normal cold start "valve clatter" since it was still there after several minutes.

However, I drove another 15 miles and the noise was gone. Stopped, started, drove another 20 miles and still sounds fine, no ticking/tapping.

Is this normal behavior for the 63 engine? I did a search and some have mentioned the purge valve or lifter noise and say it's normal. Just wanted to know what 63 owners have experienced on cold starts after the car's been left a while.

Thank you!

I had same problem with E63. My car was parked for a week. I took it to the dealer and SA said it was normal. I know that there are number of cars with same issues. I was worried about my car but the noise is gone and it is fine.
I used camera to recored the sound and I am keeping it for record.
Also My SA is aware of the issue so if something happens I can go back to the dealer.
Congratulation on New C63. It must be fun to drive

Thank you Ckim. The car is very fun. Love the V8 sound gurgling all the time. Can't wait til breakin is over. Getting tint and clearbra tomorrow. I will just note this as something that I could hear after the car is parked a while. This is the first time I've left it parked more than a day. Thanks for your post.

Louder than usual lifter noises is to be expected when a car has been sitting for a longer period of time - due to the oil being at the bottom of the oil pan and taking longer to go through the engine.

I notice this also when starting the car on days that are at or below freezing temperatures. I would think unless the noise remains even after the car has been running for period of time, it's normal.

OK. VERY IMPORTANT news regarding ticking/clicking engine noise on C63’s. I just dropped off my car at the dealer. They said they will get back to me tomorrow with the results of the inspection, however, I was given preliminary assumptions that I would love to share! As posted by many and reflected in numerous YouTube videos, the loud ticking/clicking sound is NOT NORMAL, especially if the frequency of the sound increases in relation to the accelerator, i.e. the more you press the gas pedal, the faster is the noise. If the noise is somewhat loud and annoying but the frequency DOES NOT increase by applying the accelerator, than in most cases it is the purge valve issue and is very easily fixed by a $70 part replacement. If the noise is high pitch, very noticeable and the frequency DOES increase when pushing the accelerator, then most likely it is the LIFTERS! Now, the lifters themselves might be the issue, or it could be as bad as an OIL PUMP that must be replaced. Hopefully, your cars are still under warranty, since that repair is very costly. My car makes noise only when it warms up, as opposed to some of you that have that problem only at the start-up, when the car is cold or has been sitting in a garage for a while. The assumption that during start-up the lifters are not yet filled with oil and that’s why they make noise does not work. In my case, the issue is that not enough pressure is created to adequately distribute oil from the oil pump into the lifters, which can cause permanent engine damage!!! Please take you cars to the dealer and have them look at the lifters if you are experiencing similar symptoms. I will keep you guys updated, as I hear more from the dealer tomorrow. Best of luck!

Thanks for replies, guys. So the latest word is: after checking my car, yesterday, the dealer said it were the "CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS" that were making the noise, NOT the lifters, and definitely NOT the purge valve, so they ordered the replacement parts and the warranty DOES cover it. If your engine sounds like mine, the ticking gets faster as you apply the accelerator and the noise does NOT go away after the car warms up (my case) just go get it checked. My noise is NOT there 100% of the time, though. It starts when the car warms up, then stops for a while, and then comes back on. Off and On for the last 9 months since brand new. All I know is that I should have brought it in sooner and never listen to the dealer in the first place. Good Luck!
