Thumbs up Merc Exec confirms TURBOS by 2010!!! YES!!!!!

Literally jumped out of my chair and shouted.

It's on gentlemen!!!

Not just a few top models too.....Merc is gonna be handing out turbs like drunken sailors!!!!

I am so F'in pumped. First line of this article pretty much sums it up.

Full Article Here
Direct from Germany today is news regarding the inclusion of a full range of turbocharged engines within the Mercedes-Benz vehicle lineup due out "by the end of 2010 at the latest," according to Daimler R&D board member Thomas Weber.

In a report published by Automotive News, Weber stated all Mercedes-Benz models will be offered in turbocharged form within two years time as part of the brand's progression towards zero-emissions vehicles.

With turbocharging technology that reduces emissions without sacrificing much power relative to higher-displacement engines, automakers can theoretically employ smaller, lighter and more economical engines in their cars. As a result, recent demand for turbo systems has increased significantly.

Mercedes-Benz's all-turbocharged move is largely due to the upcoming stricter emissions regulations set in place by European and American legislatures. Currently, Mercedes-Benz reports an average CO2 output for its lineup at roughly 178 g/km, but will be required to cut the average CO2 number down in Europe to 138 g/km by 2012.

Weber also mentioned Mercedes-Benz is planning to offer more hybrid models in the coming years, beginning next year with an all-new S-Class Bluetech hybrid sedan. Hybrids are considered to be company's medium-term solution towards more efficient vehicles. In a previous interview we had with Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche, he stated that unlike other auto executives who claim auto prices will only go up drastically as a result of CAFE and European standards, Mercedes-Benz sees the impending price per vehicle increase as a necessary that consumers will understand as an investment in future fuel savings.

With this as fact, what is the best guess on the AMG engine roadmap?

This was inevitable once BMW announced that the M5 was getting a TT V8.

Funny you quoted this, BUT ChicagoX and I met today and discussed this very issue this morning. We concurred that MB was going to a 6 or 4 cylinder based engine with some type of forced induction. I can imagine that superchargers will work as well too. They've been around longer and guess what, YOU CAN turn them off with a switch for fuel economy. Turbos require a waste gate and dont work as well off the digg, unless sequential, as the SC. Jerry is working on a SC switch and I'd like to be the beta tester for that.

63 W/turbo=600HP. in stock form...... Hope the new body style remains unique, unlike the new "C class", Camry look.

I just knew they were going back to forced induction. As anyone knows, the C32, SLK and the SRT-6 Crossfire engine is one of the easiest and most efficient cars to mod (and it aint bad on gas either). I have the same engine as you in the C55 (ML55) and the car/ truck is fast, BUT its a PIGGG on gas, hard to mod (at least cheaply anyway) and is going the way of the dinosaur. Now, all they need to do is make a V-6 3.5 or 3.8 litre with a SC or turbo in an AMG model and I am in like flint!!!

Probably an inevitable direction given the petrol prices (can't imagine what they must be in the U.K. and Germany?!).

Audi is strongly speculated to be supercharging the V6 for their performance S4 and RS4 models instead of the pretty spectacular V8s, and with BMW pushing TT V8 M5 as another poster said - not to mention the great 3.0 litre turbocharged I6 in the 335i/535i ranges - MB is on the market trend line with this news.

Seriously though, how much bigger in terms of capacity and displacement could gasoline powered NA engines have gotten??!!

Jim, I hope this article is true...... it just seems that every month, an article comes out with a contradicting view. Do you remember not too long ago when an article was released quoting one of the AMG head officials stating the "German HP War was OVER", and that AMG will focus on weight reduction and other handling aspects.

Twin Turbo 6.2L V8 would be amazing
