TPMS sensor question

For those of you that bought another set of sensors for your aftermarket wheels, did you have to take car to dealer to get new sensors to be recognised by the car or is there a reset you can do at home?

Thanks

No Trip to the dealer required..Just reset it via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel

When I go to the multifunction screen for the tire pressure, it says no sensors found. When I try to reset it by pressing the reset button, it does nothing at all.

Your post does not state if you have the OE rims fitted or AFTERMARKET Rims fitted..are You sure the tire shop installed the sensors?

As If the sensors are in fact installed they should show up

FWIW I purchased a set of sensors installed with my winter tires and wheels last year from the Tire Rack and they worked flawlessly.

The dealer tech was actually surprised that nothing was needed other than to reset through the on-board function.

And when I had the set taken off in spring and the stock wheels/tires reinstalled at a wheel/tire specialist, I again didn't encounter any problems.

There are quite a few different TPMS out there (not sure why)... and if you have ones (same shape, size, etc.) w/ different frequency, it won't work.

They may have installed the wrong sensors. I'm not to familar with MB sensors but I had a similar problem with one of my BMW's, appearently there are 4-5 different sensors for BMW's. I think they are different Mhz or something along those lines, the sensors can look the same but be transmitting in a language or frequency your car can not read. Unfortunetly the only way to tell is if you dismount the tire from the wheel and look at the number on the body of the sensor.

The sensors are on aftermarket wheels, I watched as the tireshop installed the sensors so I know they are in the wheels. The frequency is the same as stock 315mhz.
The only difference here is that I removed my stock wheels and put on the aftermarkets without sensors originally. After a long ride the car detected that there were no sensors installed and displayed that in the dash. A few weeks later I bought sensors for the aftermarket wheels, but now the car won't go through any type of detection phase, it will just read no sensors installed right off the bat when I turn on the car.
When I removed the stock wheels it took a really long ride for the car to detect that the sensors weren't there, but now it doesnt even bother checking and just displays no sensors installed.

I believe it stand for Tire Pressure Monitoring System/Sensor. I would assume your 2006 E55 came with them. One way to determin for sure is if you go out to your car and let 10 pounds of pressure out of one of your tires, if you get some sort of annoying warning or symbol on your dash or gauges you have TPMS. Some cars like Corvettes and some BMW's will actually tell you which tire is low and the actual psi in each tire. Most new cars have it, even cheap cars like Chevy Cobalts are coming with them as standard equipment.
I find them more trouble than they are worth, I am in tune with my vehicles where I can feel if I am 8-10 pounds low in a tire. They are very annoying, especially this time of year living in a climate that has daily temps ranging from low to mid 40's at night to upper 70's - low 80's during the day. In the morning the sensors are on due to the cold air, but in the afternoon they go away when the air warms up...quite an annoyance.

The acronym is for Tire Pressure Monitoring System and not all MBs with it have sensors. The newer rides use calculations to determine if a tire is low. You basically reset them with air in and the alarm goes off if the diameter changes. The '06 E55 DID NOT come with TPMS, as it was being phased out. My '05 had it, but not the '06. I'm personally not a fan of them in a road car, especially if you don't run no-flats (they are really why TPMS was introduced).

edit: TPMS was not standard on the '06. i think it was only offered with specific configurations.

In the OP's case, the car should pick the sensors up, even if you did not reset. The reset just makes it happen faster and also "calibrates". What size wheels and rims did you go with? I ask because it is hard to get the working sensors into a low profile tire and some of the aftermarket sensors don't jive.

I'm running 20" Maya MRS with the sensors and am using siemans 315mhz sensors which are a direct replacement for OEM

The sensor fit into the 20s? What series tires? I thought that was an issue as well (size) eventhough they could just lay it sideways or something.

I'd throw the OEM rims back on and reset the ecu, then try to reset the getup. If that stalls, then let warranty deal with an electrical gremlin.

That sounds like a good idea, but how would I reset the ECU?

The tires are 305/25/20 and 255/30/20 and the sensors fit in there with an adapter for my "L" shaped valve stems

Thanks

Look up sneaky ecu reset and do it. If that doesn't help, I'd take it in.
