Pulley and serpentine belt replacement: cost? complex job?
Hey all,
Wondering if anyone can tell me how complex a job it is to replace the S belt on our cars? I'm dealing with a GREAT shop now days (thank god the dealership is a thing of the past). I was losing power and getting ESP visit workshop warnings so I brought it in. They ran the codes and looked around and found that my SC belt was gone and the SC belt tensioner was totally missing. That explains the sluggish performance, I thought I was crazy for a few days, thinking that the car never made the power I remember That's a sure sign of E55 denial syndrome. You THINK your car might not have been as fast as before, but when the power comes back you laugh at how slow it was when it was busted.
But I digress:
How complex a job is replacing the main serpentine belt? Big job? Does the crank need to be removed? I'm talking 'by the book' and assuming they don't have a trick up their sleeve to do it more quickly. But if they do it to MB specs, it is a half hour job or a 3 hour job?
All thanks,
Skeeter

The crank does not have to be removed. I watched my mechanic replace the serpentine belt and the supercharger belt on my E55 in under 1/2 hour without putting the car on a lift. You should check out the DIY on this. it's pretty straightforward.

Any belt or tensioner job is straight forward and quick if the mechanic is competent.
A chewed up crank key or replacing the accessories tensioner would be more involved but rare.
Difficulty scale from 1 to 10...
SC Belt (1)
Accessories (2)
