Horsepower versus ambient temperatures
Has anyone ever dynoed an E55 at ambient temperatures of say 45 degrees versus 85 degrees? My car feels at least 50 HP stronger in cool weather versus over 85 degrees and I was wondering if there was any empirical data available.

They said there was a shop in Washington Pa with a dyno and offered to test the car at their expense which I quickly agreed to. Unfortunately, MB USA shut it down and sent a regional tech guy to look at the car. After repeated 0 to 60 runs on route 79 they finally figured out that the SC wasn't working!!!!!!!!!
The irony is the SC came back by itself after a week but MB still wanted to replace the ECU, which they did. I should add that this is around the same time the ECU reflash issue was hot and heavy and I know they also reflashed the ECU. It took a long time to get the car back to where it was before this happy episode.
After this experience, I travel the extra miles to take the car to Bobby Rahall MB in Wexford and it is well worth it.
By the way, if you know a good tuner in Pittsburgh let me know. I am considering a pulley, ECU tune and cooling mods but am scared to death to have anyone but an expert mess with the car.

Good news is BR Mercedes is mod freindly. I use them all the time. Heck they will even install parts for you, and give you a free rental while they do it
See yeah

As AMGguy pointed out.....there is a 1 to 1.25% increase in HP for every 10 degree drop in temps. So 40* in your example would be worth 4 to 5% increase in HP from just density of the air. Thats 20whp. Now---since our cars are ECU controlled and many of the safety parameters built into the ECU are related to temp----the car may actually run more timing at the lower temps than the higher temps---thereby giving an extra 20-30rwhp
I tested my car this past summer many times from 0-100mph....I got 9.4-9.6 in temps around 80-85 degrees.....I tested yesterday in 34degree weather...8.5-8.7. Thats a full second almost! Its definately more than 20whp. The timing gives not just more peak--but great area under the curve.

DA= density altitude is crucial information to any performance expectations. That's why when someone post a time, it's even more impressive to have a great time at a higher elevation DA.

In addition to the relationship between air density and HP, our cars pull a substantial amount of timing when hot.
Simply being below the many triggers of IAT and coolant temp will allow the car to perform better than on the "average" day.

I know someone who used to be my service adviser at Rahal who is now a salesman at MB of Pittsburgh (in Shadyside). I've had conversations with him in the past about the best way to go about installing mods and he told me he could probably give me the name of a tech to do the work for you. Let me know if your interested and I will give him a call for you.

Yes, I am speaking about Bob, and he is a great salesman and an even better guy/friend.
I have personally never had any aftermarket MB work done by their techs, but I did get a clutch replaced on a Porsche 911 C4 by one of their ex techs whom left to open his own shop. I'll talk to Bob in the next few days and see if he would recommend any of the techs he knowa for this type of work. Your just looking for a pulley and IC pump upgrade right?
