So...about those $2,500 Long Tube Headers...
To sum up some of the ground covered before the thread went into the weeds...
Jangy found a possible source for a long tube header exhaust system for an E55. Cost was $2,500 for quantity 1, $2,000 for a group buy of 10 or more. Original post here: https://mbworld.org/forums/3333673-post1.html
The exhaust was based on a system that Chiromikey had custom built for his E55. He is happy with the exhaust and it has performed well for him. Original thread here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...aust-pics.html
Some of the on-topic points raised in the original thread:
- The exhaust is made out of coated mild steel, not stainless. There was some discussion on the pros and cons of that approach.
- There was some disagreement on the effectiveness of the design.
- VRP has the right to resell headers based on the same design but hasn't claimed that they have exclusive rights to the design, at least not yet.
- VRP also has the original jig on which the headers, which it obtained when the original production shop closed.
Any comments at all about the would-be manufacturer? Is he able to crank out exhaust systems right now? Or does he need to build a jig first since VRP has the original?
What about quality? It sounds like the manufacturer is US-based, which would mean he can't afford to pay himself $1 per hour for his time. Is $2,000 to $2,500 enough for the quality to be reasonable? Or would the guy rush through the build process in order to get a reasonable $ per hour rate?
What do folks think?
yes, i'm biased...but i spent much of the time looking over his shoulder during the build and i would put the quality of his system against ANY manufacture's. also, he currently IS available to build headers if commissioned.
