How do you know if one of your HID's are starting to go out?
The left HID light on the wife's ML starts off white but then slowly turns violet almost pinkish

Yep. The bulb is going out.
If you really want to test it, you can swap left/right to see if the effect follows the bulb.
I wouldn't buy the replacement bulb from the dealer though, they'll charge you double the price of what you can get outside.
On Ebay, you can get HID bulbs as cheap as $20/each or as expensive as $200 each. All depends on what you want.

Stick with Hella or Osram bulbs for replacement and save your heartache on the cheap Taiwanese and Chinese bulbs. They are garbage. Try Daniel Stern Lighting and get an education as to value and what works first. Then go shopping. I have been there .The cheaper bulbs do not last and through a crappy light.
