C63 or E55
Hey guys...
I'm looking to buy a new car fairly soon in the next couple of months. This car is going to be my daily driver and is not going to be new. I am going to buy it used hopefully 07-08 with low miles on it however i wanted to ask for your guy's opinion on which i should choose.
1. This is going to be my daily driver
2. Money difference is not an issue
If you guys can choose which car or another option and tell me WHY i would really appreciate it! Thanks.

You can get good power out of the 63's but the 55k cars have been around for some time and have a bit more aftermarket support. Whatever you do make sure you get a warranty.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Nowadays, I love having the space of a mid size sedan that can run with just about anything. A C63 with just some minor mods is going to be quicker than the E, methinks, but is smaller and isn't going to have the same level of comfort.
Personally, I go with the E all day long.

It is a toss up.....
I like the C63 for its size and great handling characteristics. I could argue that it is the best handling AMG that doesn't wear a Black Series logo. The power of the 6.3 engine is very strong in that chassis and the ECU can be reflashed to get the same output as the E63.
The E55 is more comfortable and doesn't handle nearly as well but has gobs of power to shove you in the back. Between the supercharged V8 and the 5 speed speedshift tranny, the thing is a monster. It is also an easily tuned monster that can make some big reliable power.
The E63 is also a good car but not easily tuned like the E55 and lacking the stump pulling thrust of the E55.
If I drove in a straight line down the highway or around town, the E55 would be my choice. If I drove anywhere that put curves into the mix, I would go for the C63 over the E55 OR E63.
E55 and C63 FTW!

i appreciate it. I am going to look more into the cars. Warranty wise for the E55 if i go with Evosport, MHP or whoever, will it make my warranty go away on any of the cars?

there is no e55 in 07- you would have to go for a e63.
I know price isn't a issue but man you can get a e55 and e63 really cheap these days. I have seen 04- e55's in the 20K range. That saves alot of money for a whole lot of mods.
The e55 or e63 is a much more civilized daily driver. If you want a car that you can mod out and make it to racing machine then go for the c63. The e55 is a larger sedan and for me doesnt have the same effect. I feel akward putting a louder exhaust system on my e63 where if I had a c63 i wouldn't care. Seems like two different cars for two different purposes.
I use my e63 as a DD, l love the comfort, speed and room. This is what the car was built for.
If you want alot of attention with a modded car, the c63 is the way to go.

Hey zivicirl...here's some quick advice coming from someone who has both an 06 E55 and C63. As others have said, if you want pure straight line acceleration AND comfort, there is no other choice than the E55. The ride is much more plush and forgiving, the interior feels richer with the alcantara headliner and more supple leather. The increased torque is noticeable over the C63, and the rear seats do offer a bit more leg room. I havn't bothered to modify it at all, but clearly the 55k is mod friendly.
The C63, on the other hand, is mod friendly as well...more so than other 63s simply because this engine has in fact been detuned. 520+ hp seems to be no problem with just a simple ECU flash. 550+ with a few other mods...so any lack in power/torque vs the E55 can be made up quite easily.
The handling between the 2 cars is night and day. The steering on the C63 is light, and even though the car is no featherweight, it feels considerably lighter around corners. Very planted and secure. I just upgraded the suspension on my C63 to KW V3 coilovers and let me tell you AGAIN the handling has improved even that much more! I won't go into all the details here, but I plan to post my review over in the C63 forum later this week.
The sound again is quite different between the 2 cars. The C63 will turn heads when you stomp on the gas, whereas the E55 is very stealthy in its approach. They both sound good imo, but I do like the surprise on people's faces when they here this loud burly sound coming from a Mercedes. The interior on the C63 is overall more sporty, but not quite as refined or comfortable (not to say it isn't comfortable because it is). The seats are awesome, and the flat bottom steering wheel with the aluminum paddle shifters feels very race inspired. I also prefer the newer Command system in the C63, and the iDrive style knob is quite easy to use.
Lastly, the shifts are noticeably quicker in the C63, and the blip downshifts are a nice touch. This review may seem a bit biased towards the C63, which isn't really my intention, but I just wanted to point out all the improvements they have made to really enhance the sporting driving nature of this particular AMG.

I have owned 2 E55's and I also think highly of the E63. I recently purchased a C63 and I really love this car!!

The biggest difference from the E55 is the handling period. The other is the top end power of the E55 over the C63. I had a few mods on my last E55 and it really came alive on the top end from them. I plan on the ECU mod from either Kleeman or Evosport and am looking forward to that.
The one negative of the C63 is its horrendous around town driving which is about 13 mpg for me. When I take it on long highway trips it goes up to 19 to 21 mpg but again that's not overall.
The last thing is that the C63 uses oil over the mileage. For me it's been 2 quarts in 4000 miles. My two E55's only used 1 quart among both of them in around 60K miles total between them.
The net for me is that the C63 is more fun to drive period!
Phil
I would go for the E63 first, E55 second and the C63 last. I like the room inside of my E63. I like how the car is newer. I like the fact it doesn't have a Super Charger after hearing all the problems on this forum lately. The E63's interior dominates over all. It's fast as chit. Puts my C6 Corvette and my Jeep SRT8 to shame.

. I understand that these are two different cars in their own way... Its hard for me to make a decision, but basically i am going to own this car for about 4-5 maybe even 6 years.. if that changes anything. It will be my DD. However, i am younger and i still enjoy having a more sporty car but then again from what people say the C63 is a bit "annoying" to drive through town everyday (comfort wise + gas). Im looking to mod whichever car i get for sure. I had another question getting a ECU flash (chip) on either the E55/E63 or C63 will it get rid of my warranty and second if you had to choose between having one of the two cars which one would you take?

There is none
The main problem is the old pump, which is fixed by the new one and that’s it.
Power point of view its 55k (till now) mod list is endless and so is the power

Many have complemented on the C63 though. IT handles much better & is more controllable then what people driving mercs are used to (coming from people who have driven it, I have yet to).
That thing with tune and headers is flying! Based on numbers surfacing
Down side cheap looking interior/ plastic feel, room restriction in the back, option list
I wonder what a tuned, camed, long tube headers, intake modified, dymg wheel C63 would be running….
would the trany hold though.....too few modifed 63's are out there to compare to

Not to start an E55 v. E63 thread but one large reason they dropped the 32K and 55K motors was because people were complaining about the chirp and jerk from the supercharger clutch engagement. It is not a problem, just the nature of the beast. They also ditched the dynamic seats and some other warranty intensive parts to cut complaints and costs.
The E63 is an amazing automobile and very smooth but I prefer the beastly nature of the E55, especially wen it is tuned.
The C63 flashed to the full 500HP+ has so much power in such a tight little package that it really is a great car. I would trade my E55 for one provided I got all the options like the Alcantara headliner, all the electronic options, etc. I priced one at the dealership and it was around $75K in a trim level comparable to the E. THe only bummer is you can't get Dynamic seats and also couldn't get Distronic cruise if memory serves.
Another consideration is that you can buy a C63 and aside from the ECU flash to E63 spec, just drive it. If you buy an E55, you will get mod fever.
BTW, I am a sports car guy, not a luxo sedan guy...the only reason I bought a car the size of the E55 was because it was such a unique package from top to bottom. I tried the E63 and it wasn't wild enough, the C63 wasn't out yet, there was no CLK63 BS, the SL65 was too expensive, and the SL55 was great but I the E55 felt better to me. This being said, I do not like the front of the E55 and updated it to the E63 front end which makes it much more aggressive.
Good luck with your decision!

if your planning on doing ECU mods, spend a little money and buy a 2nd ECU. Its nice having one you can leave at stock format so when you need to make visits to the dealer you dont have warranty issues. And the second is for letting tuners play with.
...thats what i ultimatly ended up doing. Now that my dealer doesnt seem to care about my ecu mod I have two different tunes on ecu's
Regardless to whatever car you choose. Do yourself a favor...

it does not apply to modded cars. Only to stock cars with just ecu tune
I have yet to see any gains that are tangable from a 55 or a 63 (other then C) from just an ECU tune that make it worth while....
I dont have graphs and all handy, but from stock my car dyno'd just below 400 to the wheels and after was consistantly around 420.
Unfortunatly i dont have anything to back up what happened since it was a couple years ago and have lost most of my printout.
IMO there are gains to be had off just a tune frow stock on these cars.

Yes, I found the chirp a little annoying.
I personally like the chirp and the "rough" engagement.. It reminds me of the monster that's lurking within.
For those that don't like the chirp, since most people on this forum have warranty coverage, go to your dealership and complain about the chirp and get the updated pully/clutch assembly. From what I understand it does away with the chirp.
