Is there a way to check the Trans Fluid Level?
Had a slight leak in the gasket that my buddy fixed by changing the gasket around the pan. According to the manual there is no way to check the trans fluid and it just tell me to take it to the dealer. Is there a way to check trans fluid as i want to be sure that there is enough. Would the computer indicate to me if the fluid level was low?..also where would I add the fluid if needed. Thanks in advance guys!!

In order to check the transmission fluid level, you need the MB factory dipstick tool, pn 140 589 15 21 00. Plus, when you pry off the cap to the dipstick tube, you will need a new lock pin for the filler tube (pn 140 991 00 55). And don't forget to replace the seal while you're at it (pn 022 997 22 48).
The dip stick has two measuring ranges, one for cold and one for hot. The only way to determine the exact transmission oil level is when the fluid is hot - at precisely 80 degrees Celsius.
In order to measure the transmission oil temperature, use your Star Diagnostic tool, or if you don't have one (like most of us), then use a infrared thermometer on the transmission pan.
The key is never to have too little or too much fluid in the transmission; otherwise damage will result.

Why Merc make it so us owners can't check our own tranny fluids. I di not know that, though all vehicles have then, its important. Are they afraid we may be stupid enough to pour engine oil in the tranny dip stick? Or they just want to make even more money!
