C&D article hp rating
In the C&D article it mentioned that the 496hp AMG powerplant only puts out 469 in the E55. The next two sentences mentioned it was because of the length of the exhaust relative to the S55. So does this mean there is another 27hp to be found in a new exhaust system? Seems like an aftermarket tuners dream.

E55
I asked directly AMG in Affalternbach and got as an answer that due to space restricition in the exhaust part and in the airbox part the power is reduced.
My personal guess is that this is more due to marketing. At the very end it does not matter that much. The first SL55 AMG were also delivered with HP 476. Then it was "discovered" that most models were at the upper scale of the tolerance, so the rating was upgraded.
If you take the usual tolerance which you have to accept anyway as a customer (5%) then the 476 would be at the lower end of 500HP or the 500HP would be at the upper end of the 476Hp tolerance.
I have driven the new SL55 AMG and the new E55 AMG and there's no big difference to be noted, another sign that there's more marketing than technology involved.

I also believe it is marketing....over substance. I was really impressed with the 1/4 mile trap speed which is a true indication of horsepower. If you plug that 1/4 mile time and trap speed, and curb weight into "dynonometer" or Horsepower calculator software... a whopping 536hp is estimated at the crank. This is probably a little high and not completely accurate method. However, when you input an M5's best recorded time of 13.08 @109.41 (Motor Trend) it estimates 420hp. This is about 6.5% optimistic. If you use the 536hp figure and assume the same 5% optimistic factor...you come up with 501hp.
