South of Spain My family has a place in Marbella
Alhambra, Granada, Cadiz, Seville, and Malaga.

My favorite is the Alhambra Experience and Trader Vics in Marbella.

Gibraltar is interesting if you want to see what London looked like in the 60's

4 wheeled car.
don't drink the water there, make sure you drink bottled water, or boil it. Also, no no on ice cubes.

oh wait no, wrong Spanish speaking country.

I'm going to Barcelona for 8 days or so.
I'm thinking about driving to Marseilles, France too but not sure what to do there other than just experience the food and people.

I'm not one for the sights...

If you can, catch a flight to Ibiza for some eyecandy and amazing nightlife.

DItto to that - spent a week there a few years back and ended up partying with a well known DJ - made the trip even better!!!!!

Barcelona is fun - kind of reminds me of SF - big city - just go hit the pier and hit all the bars along the water - i equate the bars on the water to the equivalent of Austin 4th street.

enjoy your time - may be a bit slow as June is usually the month all the locals head to the beach for Holiday!

I had a job there for about a year. My best advice to you is to learn how to count in Spanish. Otherwise you just look stupid every time you spend money, if there isn't a till like in a supermarket.

In Barcelona especially look out for thieving gypsies working in family groups. They will have your wallet in a trice....

Every thing starts late out there, I spent 2 weeks in Barcelona... The streets where pack during the day and it just gets even more busy after 10... So I advise late dinner around 10ish then go out drinking after, that's how they do it there.

The beach gets better east of the city, take the train for like 45min and just get of on a beach you think looks good, simple as that!

They didnt speak to much English there esp the cabbies... and its Catalonian mostly so if you do speak spanish be prepaired for them to correct you ALOT ; D

The city is pretty simple, its grid... the gothic area is nice and some of those small streets have nice cafes... I advise also going to a Argentinian steak house... But a must have is Langastein... they are huge and the ones you see here in the states cant even come close to them!

I wish I knew the name of this place but its a Tapas joint about 5 north of La Rambla it opens at 4 and people line up to get in around 3ish, second to none and if you find it you will know why... and if you get there after 430 good luck getting in! lol

The place I worked was El Ferrol in Galicia, the birthplace of Franco. They also have their own language there, although standard Spanish is understood.

I found that just a few stock phrases would generally get me by, together with hola, gracias, and adios. The best were:

lo siento = I'm sorry
con permisso = excuse me
dos cervezas por favor = two beers please
lo mismo - same again (pointing at the food on the next table!)

Barcelona is great! A lot to see there. Rent a car and drive north along the Mediterranean coast. The serpantine roads are amazing. Visit Tossa De Mar and Palamos. Great beaches there. Visit Montserrat - it is phenomenal ! Dali museum in Figueres is great. In Barcelona there are a lot of building designed by Gaudi which are absolutely out of this world and are worth checking out from the inside, as well as Park Guell designed by Gaudi. I'll post some pictures when I get home from work....

Hope this helped !
