For the love of the car don't do it!

Sure some cars are indeed clunkers but half (probably a conservative guesstimate) of the cars being traded in aren't clunkers.

Once traded in the dealerships must rendering the engine inoperable [Read] destroy them!

What a freaking waste

All my but one of may cars are considered clunkers, the oldest clunker is a 2005 Suburban with 33k miles. How will this effect the used car market?

The trade in value won't be for more than the scrap value of the car. From cars.gov:

"In addition to this credit, will I get the full value of my trade-in vehicle?

No. The law requires your trade-in vehicle to be destroyed. Therefore, the value you negotiate with the dealer for your trade-in vehicle is not likely to exceed its scrap value. The law requires the dealer to disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in vehicle."

I can only imagine the number of people who are getting screwed by car dealers on trade (salvage) values by this incredibly stupid government program. Why should my taxes be subsidizing your purchase of a car? Freakin' insane.

Hell no! Not an AMG. Unless you can show me a fuel efficient car that puts a bigger smile on my face every time I start it....

my wife wild, but she loves every minute of it.
I have a new car. I'm waiting for the rest of the socialist programs:
  1. Cash for Carpeting;
  2. Cash for Condominiums; and,
  3. Cash for Condoms.
As Churchill said, "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery."

The "clunkers" will ultimately be destroyed. The dealer has a responsibility of disabling the car before it gets destroyed, this makes sure that the car will never see the streets again. Someone at the dealer told me that they poor some sort of liquid into the engine to disable the power plant. Then at some point the cars will get hauled off to the scrap yard where they would be destroyed.

Since the car will be scrap, there will be NO TRADE-IN VALUE offered by the dealership for your car. The $4500 is all the credit you are going to get, plus some. A friend of mine who traded in a mini-van got $200 from the dealership on top of the $4500 for "scrap value."

You'll be better off trading in your car for credit as oppose to taking the government's $4500. I can't imagine someone wanting to surrender their lovely E55 so that it could be crushed and scraped for metal. That's a horrible thing to do to an E55.

Repost from other form....
Can't wait to see a W210 go through the cash for clunkers.

This program C.A.R.S. (cash for clunkers) goes against any good reason. I do not endorse it or approve of it in any form, it is wasteful.
The Japanese manufactures stand to gain the most new car business and China gets all the scrap. US tax payers get a loose loose situation.

E55 is not on the list and as mentioned the max is 4500.00 I am only seeing junkmobiles come in right now. If your car is worth more than 4500 ACV on trade why use the program?
