Introduction
I am starting to look for an E55 AMG. I currently drive an 06 GTI with GIAC chip. As such, the E55 is going to be a hugh upgrade in power.
From what I read, it appears that it would be better to buy an 05 or 06 as it appears there were some issues with the 03 and 04 that were ironed out during the facelift of the 05.
I have searched the prior postings but I could not find answer to the following questions. Any help would be appreciated
1. Is there any aftermarket program that I can plug into the OBDII port to diagnose any issues with the car. On the VW, I have a Ross-Tech Cable that connects and I can scan the engine for fault codes, soft codes and monitor real time data.
2. Can the average person work on these cars. I plan on doing most of the maintenance my self. I have changed clutches, timing chains etc on other cars but this will be my first MB.
3. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for when I am shopping for a car? I know to look for maintenance history, but are their any tell tale signs that the car may have some issues.
4. Any San Diego E55 owners on here?
Thanks everyone
Nate
The downside to Mercedes ownership is that these are expensive cars to maintain, especially if you have no warranty. If you plan to wrench the car on your own, I think you will have a big challenge in front of you....good luck.

I would get the newest one I could, but miles and warranty should be the most important.

Yes, I have an OBDII reader that gives lots of parameters. No changing, yet though. The next generation scanner is supposed to do it.

Then you will be fine with maintenance. Electronics is where it gets tricky.

I would look into warranty status. If it has none, then that is a sign that it wasn't clean enough to CPO. Buyer's market so get one filthy cheap or extra clean for a bit more.

Do you go to the Fusion Wed night meets? Thanks everyone

there is no affordable equivalent of rosstech's vag-com for mercedes....unfortunately. the only thing that will give you that much control and detail is the MB STAR.
