E63 HID bulb replacement

So I am about to tick 40k miles on my E63 and I get a message on my dash that the passenger light is out. I take it out and notice that the ballast is attached to the D2S bulb! how the heck do I get that off since I want to swap bulbs and make sure it is not my ballast!?!

ps... the stealer wants 310$ a PIECE for the bulbs (and they have to each be replaced at the same time) ONline sylvania's are 75$ and I can get 2 philips for 75$!! what a rip

What you mean attached? Like melted together?

If you are looking for D2S bulbs, PM me for bulb prices.

a quarter mile at a time
It's because it's a D1S bulb, not D2S.

So the E63 has different bulbs than the E55's? I thought the E55 used D2S bulbs?

Its actually the igniter that is attached to the bulb as one piece on the D1S, not the ballast. The ballast will be located under the actual headlamp. Glad to hear that you got taken care of through warranty.

This should be a warranty replacement if your car is under warranty which I would hope an E63 is. Just had one done on my e55 under warranty.

Bumping this older thread... my passenger side ballast has crapped out per the dealer (my headlight on the passenger side was flickering/flashing like a strobe light at idle) and the dealer wanted $1k+ to replace the part and install.

I've found the appropriate part on eBay used, but does anyone have instructions to replace the ballast? Do I have to remove the entire bumper to access the headlight? This is for an '07 E63. Thanks!

My driver side flickers for week before I smack the headlight lens and it was dead. Removing it is easy putting it back is a PIA. It would help if you have small hand or get your wife to help you like I did.

Reach behind the headlight and remove the black cover by turning it counter clock.
Remove the connect to the igniter.
Turn the bulb/igniter counter clock until you hear a click than pull it out.
*Remember which position the bulb is in when you pull it out so when you put it back and turn to lock it in you won't break the small bar that run parallel to the bulb.

Drive side is easy if you move the coolant tank aside.

GL!

It doesn't -- it's just the ballast alone. The bulb is a separate part #. From EPC:

The dealer told me I needed A 211 870 55 85 (previously known as A 211 870 90 26 and A 211 870 88 26.)
