I'm a newcomer to this board and a soon to be owner of an '04 e55 ,my ride is an '06 M5 that i love so much, but i'm going to sell mainly because of the reliability of the SMG and it's jerkiness in city driving.Anyways, i was wondering if a stage 1 (pulley, tune,HE,pump) would be able to beat my M5 at higher speeds? (i'm not concerned at lower speeds since the stock e55 beats the M5 at lower speeds so i'm not questioning that) .i mean i don't wanna miss my M5's high speed dominance especially at 120mph+.

whaddya guys think?

I'd say Stage 1 would be more than Sufficient for what you are trying to achieve.

I'm on my fone right now so I can't copy the link but I just raced a m5 about 1 month ago multiple times. Both stock. Go to youtube and search: lumibrisk. Every e55 race there is my car. Stock vs stock there isn't much of a difference between both cars even at high speeds.

This is the 2nd m5 I raced and both drivers of the m5 would vouch for it. They are very close all around to speed if both driven correctly.

Now the same night I raced a m5 a member with tune/pulley/res & cat del raced the same m5 and walked it hard. I was in the car of the e55 and it was a few car lengths and same results multiple times. So a stage 1 clearly will beat a m5 no problem. Stock vs stock they are near identical.

Hope this helps. Got videos and personal to back up everything I'm saying so I'm not just talkn out my @$$

I haven't seen any either, but a CTS-V will walk away from an M5 every time...It was on my shopping list, but you just can't compare the interior to a Benz

Be prepared for inferior brake feel, a lack of steering feel and loose body control. However, E55ks ride smoother and provide effortless power allowing you to stomp and leave almost anything without a second thought.

agreed- 211s are smooth and comfy.

Teefer- I came from an 08 M5 and seriously miss the handling and the high revving V10, but do not miss the SMG. I wish they made the E60 with the dct. however, these 211's are seriously convenient with height lift, smooth tranny and huge torque on tap

+1. My E55 was an odd fish that made 435 RWHP bone stock and easily walked stock M5/M6, but SBC (brake by wire) sucks. Slight lowering and the right tires willl improve handling, but basically, they wallow around corners like a bowl of jello in an earthquake, even on sport 2.

stage 1 in today's tuner is much more aggressive than before.

If we are talking about a pulley of 172mm and bigger and the right tuning.. it will edge out the M5... but there will be a point the gearing will come in to a factor.

Also.. heat soaking and ambient temps will be the critical issue.

On a 90F day... the 55 car will need cooling mods to keep up. I will give the edge to the stock M5

On a 50F evening.. the 55 car will not have problems putting down all the power.

Interesting as my brake feel with 'Reds" is actually very good regardless of speed. I have not experienced any of the issues some others brought up.
To answer the OP, just reiterating what others have said, Stage 1 will easily pull an M5 at any speed. Off the line though will require a little finesse as the car has so much tq.

yes,i'm still uneasy about these deficiencies, if i might say, when compared to the M5.
I sure hope the torque, better refinement and the smoothness of the shifts quickly compensate for the void i'll be having from selling the M5.I think anyone who has driven the M5 knows what i'm talking about

i smoke M5s all the time. and funny that they want to start @ 200km and we do and i pull more than 2 cars length up to 280km and they stop racing knowing they will never catch up.

that's very nice to hear, however i think you also have TBs and headers so maybe these help too.did you try with any of them before your headers and TBs?

On paper though, isn't their car so much faster? 505HP vs 469HP?

No man the E55 engine is a under rated engine. I dynoed at 411 whp 456wtq. That comes out to near 500hp / 550 tq STOCK. This is why our cars that are properly running hold their own so well.

Just check out my runs vs the M5. I raced another 1 off camera with same results as the 1 I raced. Stock vs stoxk its very very close. Drivers race.

I spent about an hour driving the M5 that is for sale at Passport BMW. The only real thing the 55k and the M5 has in common is that they both have 4 doors and headlights. Daily driver, Benz with ease. Weekend/Track day car, M5. Just might be an M5 parked next to my Estate very soon!

So will you loose out @ 120 to an M5? Maybe... I am positive you will lose out if you have to take turns at that speed.
