How smooth is the E55 engine at idle?

100% normal, they are a bit rough when cold and also not the worlds smoothest running V8 but by no means a rough motor compared to anything with similar power output.

When mine's cold(first 15-20 minutes of driving in single-digit temps) it feels like a garbage truck. After it's warmed up it is still nowhere near as smooth as a $90,000 car should be, but it's certainly acceptable. Since the day I bought it 20,000 miles ago I thought something was wrong, but after new plugs, motor mounts, and tranny mounts I'm convinced that's just the way it is. In the Summertime it's much better. I attribute most of this to the fluid in the motor mounts being super-viscous in cold temps., and it takes a long time for engine heat to reach them.
If you think that's bad, go to the McDonalds drive-thru, roll down the window, and take a listen. You'd swear a Cavalier with 300K on it was idling next to you. My engine has made the same sounds for 20K, never getting better or worse, and runs like a raped ape. Good enough for me.

Since mines been sitting in a garage for the past 2 years with basically no miles put on it I'm sure the belts may need a once over, but I guess we'll see how bad the stealer needs some revenue once they look at the service records. I can't wait to hear "Oh this and that and also this haven't been done since...."

I've got some serious belt squeaking when cold. It's been in the 10's here the past couple mornings... It's going in to get a service tomorrow. I'll ask about it since it's my first one since purchasing the car.

Definitely keep me posted. Rough idle is one thing but squeaking is not cool.
