Crank control sensor FAIL
Had to go to the dentist this morning and after that was over with went out to the beast and it wouldn't start. After about 3 tries it fired up....well I made it about 3 miles and the car COMPLETELY shut down. No power steering and I was lucky to have just gone through a construction zone and was able to limp off on the shoulder. After waiting for an hour and half the tow truck showed up. 60 mile tow to the MB dealership, fortunately it was free b/c of good insurance and my brother replaced the stupid sensor. Total cost 138.00 bucks. Mostly pissed I lost half of my day.

Too Bad, I know those crank position sensor failures are pretty common on the older W210 V8 cars. Sounds like yours had all the classic symptoms hard start and when warmed up the engine dies.

My 2001 E320 CDI died on me on holiday, the temperature was just under the 100 when it went. Is this likely to be the same issue?

Replaced Crank Position Sensor
Hi
Just had the crank position sensor replaced, the old one was very badly and took a lot of getting out!
Anyhow it is done now and seems to have improved things considerably.
Thanks
John

These are cheap, easy to replace, and a common failure that leaves people stranded. Spend around $60 and order one online and replace it yourself in 15 minutes every ~4 years and drive happy.
