Or "I was @ BMW dealership about to buy an M3 until I checked my Iphone & perused the M3 Forums, close call! I couldn't bare the thought of driving a vehicle w/that sort of online ownership/reputation"

The Best of Mercedes & AMG

The guy was no doubt from either the KSA or UAE, and saying things like camel, goats, pajamas is specifically targeting his ethnicity and not his lack of judgment about cars. It was an attack (or joke, however you want to rationalize it) on him and his "Arabness" and not his ignorance or stupidity or whatever, about buying an AMG.
Calling somebody (whether they're Black, White, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, etc.) an "old man" because they drive a Mercedes or a "boy racer" because they drive a BMW is targeting the brand stereotype and not the person specifically. It's different than telling somebody who's Saudi that they should get a camel because "hey, don't all Arabs wear pajamas and ride camels" (despite that the reality of life in those outrageously wealthy and super modern countries is long past using camels as transport.)
Making reference to a camel jockey or a bean eater or somebody from Hymie-Town, etc., is a lot different than telling the guy he's simply a dumb *** rich naive kid for thinking of ordering a C63 with a McLaren 722s motor in it (or whatever the hell he was talking about.)
You all may proceed now in anyway you wish. I'm done

If you can't see the loss you self impose w/your thinking you are truly the one missing the boat. I'd buy a C63 in the future or an M3, E55/63 ala' TT that is
Sure the C63 forum's currently infested w/children, it doesn't change the fact it's still a great car/platform.

you thinking i'm missing something is purely your opinion. however, i don't ever recall saying any thing bad about those cars or that i wouldn't buy one...just the people surrounding them made me look at other cars on my list.

i hope that's good enough for you. either way, have a good night buddy.
my statement wasn't sarcastic in the least, it was 100% truth. as far as your spin on what was said, you can't deny it was either attempted humor or far fetched...and now it seems more like you're the one wondering why they got called on it. in truth, it did make me chuckle if that makes you feel any better.

edit : and the irony being that cars (eg the E55) are so cheap to buy in the States, students or pre 30's can afford them, I wonder whether anything bar an F50/Veyron etc actually equates to status.

Nice E55s can be had in the high 20s.
Lets say said student had a few summer jobs, came up with a 5k for a down payment.
They finance $23k for 5 years. With a part time job, and minimal other expenses, thats not hard to do at all.
Will it stop me from ever buying another BMW? No, of course not. But it's still there in the back of my mind.
I think one would be disingenuous to say that these things don't affect their buying choices. Stereotyping of a brand's demographic is common and, in fact, is something that marketers emphasize when advertising any consumable product (not just cars.)
Just look at that infamous series of Audi ads called "Meet the Beckers" http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/m...ercedes-and-l/
"Normal" guy with the Audi, aggressive young a-hole with the BMW, and the clueless old man ("The Commander") of the family with his young trophy wife driving the Mercedes. And if you read some of those BMW posts, the consensus seems to be that MBs are only for old farts on Viagra.
We all have our own perceptions about products out there. And we choose what to consume based not entirely on the product's virtues but also on that perception we have in our head (whether right or wrong.) And that's why manufacturers hire ad agencies at great expense: to convince us that we fall into the product's demographic. (btw, many cars have come and gone not because they weren't great cars, but because they developed a stereotype that was negative; same with lots of products.)
Part of buying a car is buying something that we think fits our persona. To deny that is being a bit dishonest, imho.

Student, summer, $5 DP, maintaining a PT income to support car payments without even listed APR and going on for 5 years. Just for your ref for the numbers you provided: at 0% that would be about $385/month not counting gas, insurance, taxes, maintenance, etc. And you know damn well 0% on a used vehicle .......

I guess you provided an example of hidden support; exactly that which you were trying to argue against.

5 year loan, 23k principal, 7% interest is $455 per month. Insurance from nationwide would be about $90 a month. Gas is lets call it $100 per month. So lets call it $650 per month in expenses.
Lets say our young student has a decent job earning $15 per hour as a caddy or it support or whatever you want. Lets say he or she works 25 hours per week (not at all unreasonable assuming some weekend hours).
Thats $375 per week, $750 per paycheck, and $1500 per month. The government will get its cut of lets say 30%, all in.
Thats $1050 per month, net.
Assuming tuition and housing is covered (scholarship, parents, whatever).
That gives him $400 per month left over for entertainment or savings.
All of this assumes that A) he buys a $28k E55 (there are plenty cheaper, such as http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...item27b0ce89ac), and B) that the student doesn't have a trade in.
Lets say he buys a $24k E55, has a trade worth $4k, and keeps the $5k down payment.
The monthly payment drops to $300
