Importing an E63 into Canada....

The digital speedo to metric and the DRL's can be set via the COMMAND system so no costly visit to MB neccessary.
Once the car is in Canada, you have 30 days to do the RIV federal inspection (performed by Canadian Tire as part of the $250 RIV fee. I had them do the provincial safety for plates at the same time). They check for metric speedo and daytime running lights(federal) and brakes, lights, emmission(provincial). Once done, RIV mailed me a sticker to place on the B pillar door frame.
I drove around with my tempory trip permit in the rear window for about a week before I actually did the inspection and got plates.
This blog was the most informative i found:

Also helpful was this site:

And this is the federal RIV (Registrar if Imported Vehicles) site that you should start with to see if the car you want is eligible for import:

As long as the dollar remains close to par, I think importing makes alot of sense.
The nice thing about the US market is that there are a lot of cars coming off 2 year leases whereas, here in Canada, we usually have 3 or 4 year leases.
