2005 E55 AMG
Newbie Needs Help

Just bought a 2005 E55 last week. It was an out of state purchase, so I paid Autochex to look over the car. Report was stellar. Everything came back excellent. Against my better judgement, I took the dealers word that his on-site auto shop thoroughly inspected the car and all was good. Well, I flew to pick up the car. Looked incredible. However, car had a strong gas smell. Which I was told before but was told it had been fixed and would be extracted before I arrived. Gas line was replaced but still had odor of gas. I was confident that I could get the smell out with Ozone machine, so I proceeded with purchase. Got the car and took to MB dealer in my hometown. There was an open recall for fuel module. They looked over the car and said that was taken care of, but car still smells. Any suggestions? Also they gave me a laundry list of repairs. Quite expensive. Can anyone tell me if these prices are reasonable? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thx.
Rear main seal leaking…$795
Transmission connector….$185
Front brakes w/ rotors….$920.00
3mm pads, rotors below legal min.
Sbc brake flush ….$285
Spark plugs……$590 (16 plugs)
Air filters…..$120

Lots of cars have had the fuel line issues (mine included). The gasoline smell dissipates after a while, but if it's really strong, there may be ongoing issues that haven't been resolved yet.

Do you work on your own cars? Air filter changes are easy, spark plugs are also a DIY (but aren't called for until 100K miles per the W211 AMG factory service sheet (most guys do them earlier, though). Brakes and brake flush are also a slightly more advanced DIY project, but definitely doable, and if you perform these three projects yourself, you can save yourself close to $1K. There are lots of us DIY'ers on the board. Welcome.

I suggest taking the car to an indy shop and cut those costs in half!

Pull the bottom rear seat and check and see if there is fuel on the lid for the pumps and sending unit. My had a cracked lid that made a small puddle of fuel and it smelled strong in the vehicle. The pumps on the passenger side had the crack on the lid.

I'm sorry to hear about your issues. I would always take any car that I buy from a lot, to the dealer for a inspection, before I buy. Unless it was purchase from a MB dealer. My advice to you, would be to find an independent shop, that specializes in MB. And have them do the work for you at least then, it would be cheaper. And remember these prices are dealer prices, and independent would charge less.

+1 a good independent shop should be able to complete all of that work for almost half the price

$560 for plugs!!! Those prices are nuts, definitely agree with what has already been said, take it to an indy shop or tackle some of the easier projects yourself.

Thanks for everyone's reply. I already told the dealer NO THANKS and am taking it to an independant mechanic.

What about the brakes? What is everyone's experience with brake jobs? With the E55 do you always have to replace the rotors too when replacing the pads? I know on my Range Rover I have always had to replace the rotors as well as pads, but it also ways 6700 lbs!
